Jamie Benn Career

Playing career

As a youth, Benn began playing hockey for the Peninsula Eagles minor hockey team and attended Stelly's Secondary School. During the 2005-06 season, he competed for the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League (VIJHL), a local junior B team based in North Saanich, British Columbia. He appeared for the Victoria Grizzlies of the Junior A British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) for three seasons from 2006-2008.

In the 2007 NHL Entry Draft from the Victoria Grizzlies, Benn was drafted 129th overall. Benn started his WHL service with the Kelowna Rockets in the draft. He scored 65 points in his rookie season in 2007-08, before moving to a team-high 46 goals with 36 assists for 82 points in 56 games in the 2008-09 WHL season. Benn paced the Rockets with a playoff-leading 33 points en route to the 2009 Ed Chynoweth Cup title after being named to the WHL West first All-Star team. Benn scored a four-goal game and added an assist in the second round of the 2009 Memorial Cup tournament, which was held in Rimouski, Quebec, where the Rockets secured a spot in the tournament's second round robin match against the Drummondville Voltigeurs, a 6–4 victory, guaranteeing the Rockets a spot in the tournament's final. Despite the fact that the Rockets lost 4–1 to the Windsor Spitfires in the Final, Benn was named to the Tournament All-Star squad along with teammate Tyler Myers.

Benn was on the Dallas Stars' roster for the 2009–10 NHL season, scoring his first NHL goal against the Vancouver Canucks' Roberto Luongo on October 11, 2009. Benn tied the score 3–3 early in the game, but the Stars lost later in the shootout.

He was sent by the Texas Stars' AHL affiliate for the 2010 Calder Cup playoffs at the end of his rookie season. Texas lost to the Hershey Bears in the Calder Cup Finals after he scored 14 goals and had 26 points in 24 playoffs games. "I had a fun summer here," Benn later related about the experience. "It was a big part of my hockey career and helped me improve my game." "I loved playing here," the author says.

Benn played a key role with the Stars in February 2011, following teammate Brad Richards' absence due to a concussion. Benn competed in the All Star Game's SuperSkills Competition and defeated his leg against Steven Stamkos and Jonathan Drouin before qualifying against Philadelphia Flyers rookie Matt Read in 13.583 and 10.204 seconds respectively.

Benn signed a deal with the Hamburg Freezers of the German DEL on October 2, 2012, despite the fact that the 2012-13 NHL season was postponed due to labour lockout. Benn missed the first four games of the shortened NHL season before re-signing to a five-year, $26.25 million contract on January 24, 2013.

On September 19, 2013, Benn was named the sixth captain of the Dallas Stars.

In the Stars' last regular-season game on April 11, 2015, Benn scored 4 points and win the Art Ross Trophy. His last point, a secondary assist with 8.5 seconds remaining in the game, allowed him to overthrowrown John Tavares for the honor.

On July 15, 2016, Benn agreed to an eight-year, $76 million contract extension with Dallas that will run through the 2024–25 NHL season for an average annual value of $9.5 million.

In Game 3 of the continuing Western Conference Finals, Dallas Stars forward Jamie Benn has been suspended two games for his vicious attack on Vegas Golden Knights captain Mark Stone, possibly ending his season. Benn was ejected less than two minutes into the Stars' 4-0 home loss on Tuesday. Benn will continue to play in the remaining game next season if Dallas loses on Thursday. As Benn fell on top of Stone, the Stars captain checked Stone near mid-ice, and at 1:53, he gave a cross-check high up Stone's body. A five-minute major penalty and a game foul were ruled by the referees.
