James Roday Life

James David Rodriguez (born April 4, 1976), also known as James Roday, is an American actor, producer, and screenwriter.

Shawn Spencer appeared on USA Network's Psych as a hyper-observant consultant detective and fake psychic.

He stars in A Million Little Things.

Early life

As James David Rodriguez, Rodriguez was born in San Antonio, Texas. He attended Taft High School in San Antonio. Jaime "Jim" Rodriguez's father is of Mexican descent, and Deborah Collins, his mother, is of English, Irish, and Scottish descent. Rodriguez's father, a retired Air Force Master Sergeant, used to be Taco Cabana's regional catering manager.

Rodriguez studied theatre and received a bachelor's degree in fine arts at New York University's Experimental Theatre Wing. He chose the word James Roday at the age of 22, and he took the name James Roday to describe himself. Rodriguez explained in a July 2020 interview that the decision was mainly driven by producers and casting directors' concerns that his Caucasian appearance clashed with his Spanish-Latino family name. The characters he read before were deemed out of a Latino background or required a non-white "Mexican" appearance. He legally changed his middle name, David, to Roday (from an Anton Chekhov play), and omitted Rodriguez from his screen name in order to book his first job. In the same interview, he regretted that he "old out my roots in about 15 seconds" and announced that going forward he would use his full legal name, James Roday Rodriguez.

Personal life

Rodriguez is the co-artistic director of the Red Dog Squadron, a Los Angeles theater company he co-founded with Brad Raider. Matt Shakman, a retired artist from Toledo and Black Dahlia, purchased the El Centro Theatre in 2012 and began a long process of renovations with the intention of reopening it under the original name Circle Theatre. Raider and Rodriguez's newsletter from August 2018 revealed that they would have to resell the theater in early 2018.

Maggie Lawson, the Psych co-star from 2006 to 2014, appeared on the series as a co-star.
