James Roberts Career

Early career

Roberts played for both the South Sydney Rabbitohs and Penrith Panthers from 2010 to 2013, winning 35 tries and 17 goals in 32 games for 168 points in his U20s career.

Roberts made his NRL debut for the South Sydney Rabbitohs against the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs at full throttle in Round 7 of the 2011 NRL season. In Round 8, his first NRL appearance was made in the Rabbitohs' 31-12 victory over the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks at ANZ Stadium. Roberts had ten matches and five tries on the 2011 NYC Team of the Year, and was voted on the wing.

During the 2012 season, Roberts did not make any appearances in the NRL. However, he did play four games for the North Sydney Bears, South Africa's feeder club team. Roberts was recalled by the Rabbitohs right away after breaking his playing contract on July 25. He joined the Penrith Panthers on August 10th, committing two years from the start of 2013.

Roberts started his Penrith Panthers off the interchange bench in their 19-10 victory over the St. George Illawarra Dragons at Jubilee Oval, making his club debut for the 2013 NRL season. He scored his first club try for Penrith in Round 16 against the Dragons, beating Penrith 25-10 at Penrith Stadium. Roberts scored a hat-trick of tries in Round 17 against the Gold Coast Titans in a man of the match victory at TIO Stadium in Darwin. Roberts also participated in the 2013 Holden Cup Grand Final against the New Zealand Warriors on October 6th, winning by two tries to the 42-30 victory. He then won the Jack Gibson Medal, which was given to the Man of the Match. In the 2013 NRL season, Roberts played six matches and scored six goals for Penrith.

Roberts was released from the Panthers for off-field misdeeds and later was "thrown a lifeline" when he signed with the Gold Coast Titans for the 2014 NRL season on March 14th. In Round 14, he made his Titans debut against the Melbourne Storm at centre and scored a try. Roberts played 12 matches in his first season with the Titans in his first season. The NRL charged him with public nuisance in Surfers Paradise on October 30.

Roberts was selected in the Titans' 2015 NRL Auckland Nines squad. In the 34-22 loss to New South Wales Country, he played for New South Wales City against New South Wales Country at center. Roberts was named Centre of the Year at the 2015 Dally M Awards. Roberts had re-signed with the Titans on a three-year deal, but it was later discovered that his manager had forged his signature into the deal, making it null and null. Roberts' request for a release from the club led to his release. Roberts had 16 attempts in 24 games during the season, leading try-scorer. He signed a two-year deal with the Brisbane Broncos on December 23nd, beginning in 2016.

Roberts was selected in the nascent New South Wales Blues squad. He appeared for the Indigenous All Stars against the World All Stars on February 13th, playing at center in the 12-8 loss at Suncorp Stadium. In Round 1 of the season, Roberts (who was celebrating his 23rd birthday) made his Brisbane Bronco debut against the Parramatta Eels, playing at center for the 17-4 victory at Parramatta Stadium. In Round 4 of the Grand Final rematch between the North Queensland Cowboys and the Brisbane Broncos, Roberts scored his first club try for the Brisbane Broncos in the 21-20 golden point extra time victory at Suncorp Stadium.

Roberts was also arrested on August 17 for yet another booze arrest after he reportedly assaulted a female bartender at the Normanby Hotel. When he was ordered to leave by intelligence, he was reportedly aggressive against them, and they were coerced to place him in a "sleep hold" to restrain him until he was unconscious. Although an ambulance was dispatched, Roberts revived consciousness and went to another bar to continue drinking for the remainder of the night. Roberts received a $20,000 fine from the NRL but escaped suspension after being told to complete a community service on his days off for his public nuisance conviction. Roberts was suspended for kicking Ryan Simpkins while he recovered from a tackle in the Week 1 Elimination Finals match against the Gold Coast Titans. Roberts was found not guilty of the contrary conduct charge and was suspended for the do-or-die Week 2 Semi Finals match against the North Queensland Cowboys, in which the Broncos lost 26-20 for the first time in the Broncos, ending their season. With nine tries in 25 matches, Roberts came to an end this year. Roberts was visiting Thailand with a close family friend and had checked himself into a rehabilitation center in order to help him with a variety of personal challenges, including a fight with alcohol, according to the publication on September 30. James' manager and uncle expressed gratitude for the Broncos' help with him, as well as the fact that everyone at the club is concerned about him as a person.'

Roberts was convicted of pulling a woman's hair at a Gold Coast Nightclub in January 2017 and was given a drunk diversion ticket by police. However, the lawsuit was eventually dismissed. Roberts was selected in the Broncos 2017 NRL Auckland Nines squad in February. In Round 7, Roberts scored a hat trick of tries for Brisbane, defeating his former team, the Titans, at Suncorp Stadium. Roberts' contract with the Broncos lasted until the 2021 season on July 27, 2017. Roberts played his 100th NRL match against the North Queensland Cowboys in Round 26, scoring a goal and winning by 20-10 at 1300SMILES Stadium. Roberts was the Broncos highest tryscorer in 26 games in the 2017 NRL season.

During the off-season, Roberts reportedly spent time in a Thailand rehabilitation center to deal with alcoholism and heroin use. He was at the same place in 2016 as he did. Roberts was selected in the 2018 State of Origins series after being in good form in the early rounds. In Game 1, in which NSW defeated Queensland 22-12 at Melbourne Cricket Ground, Roberts made his State of Origin debut in State of Origin, defeating Queensland 22-12. In the Blues 2-1 shield champion series, Roberts appeared in all three matches at center. Roberts completed the 2018 NRL season with 22 appearances and scoring 9 tries for the Broncos.

In their 34 - 14 victory over the New Zealand Maori All Stars team at AAMI Park on February 15, Roberts starred as a center.

Roberts had been released on compassionate grounds from the Brisbane Broncos on May 29th. Roberts was then locked into a contract with the South Sydney Rabbitohs until the 2021 season. He was brought back under Wayne Bennett's coaching guidance. Bennett had been the Broncos head coach for three seasons before moving to South Sydney in 2019.

In round 13 at ANZ Stadium on June 7, 2019, Roberts played for South Sydney against the Newcastle Knights. South Sydney lost 20-12, but Roberts scored a try in the 8th minute, but Roberts failed in the 8th minute.

Souths beat Brisbane Broncos by 22 - 20 in round 23, the first time in round 23. Roberts was put on alert and fined for elbowing former colleague Corey Oates in the 13th minute. He was suspended for two games and then returned to face the Sydney Roosters in the qualifying final.

Roberts did not play in Souths' elimination final loss against Canberra's on September 27th due to a dislocated thumb sustained the weekend before when Souths defeated Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles.

Roberts sustained a right pectoral injury in South Sydney's loss to Newcastle in round ten of the 2020 NRL season. He was later found out of work for a year due to the injury. Roberts signed a two-year contract with the Wests Tigers on November 19th.

In round 1 of the 2021 NRL season, he made his Wests Tigers debut against Canberra in a 30-12 loss.

Roberts scored two tries in round 12, giving them a 34-18 victory over St. George Illawarra.

After failing to comply with a Queensland Public Health law, Roberts was fined $7500 and banned for one match. Roberts crossed the biosecurity boundaries in place for players in South-East Queensland by stepping onto the balcony of his hotel room on the Gold Coast. In the 2021 NRL season, Roberts appeared in 11 games for the Wests Tigers, finishing 13th and missing the finals.

In March, a Newcastle fan and a Wests Tigers teammate were seen playing poker machines in a Newcastle hotel at 10 p.m. during an unsuccessful Tigers match against Newcastle. The drama was described as "blown out of proportion." No discipline action was taken against NRL or club because no integrity laws were broken.

Following a drive to make her Tory leader revived, Kemi Badenoch's leadership aspirations have erupted

www.dailymail.co.uk, July 30, 2023
After a drive to make her Tory leader Tony Badenoch's campaign revived, there was increasing excitement last night. A few weeks ago, Backingbadenoch.co.uk's website was silently updated, as well as the relevant Twitter and Facebook pages. The campaign, according to her aides, was "grassroots" and had nothing to do with her. Tory sources were not convinced.

I'm one of you" as she claims to have drafted a campaign manager and told MPs: I'm one of you...I'm hoping to unite the Right in a new leadership challenge?

www.dailymail.co.uk, July 22, 2023
Ms Badenoch, who was supported by Michael Gove in her leadership run last year, is reported to have named a 'campaign manager' and told MPs, 'I'm one of you.' Ms Badenoch's allies denied the allegations, saying that James Roberts, the 'campaign manager' was 'leading on MP engagement,' and that her meetings with MPs were to discuss post-Brexit deregulation. "Kemi isn't shy about what's going wrong at the moment," a senior Tory MP said. She sees herself as one of the few grown ups to take over Rishi, re-align the party to the right, and keep One Nationers happy.'
