In September 1939, James Doohan joined the Royal Canadian Artillery as a shooter aged 19. He was chosen for officer training after progressing through the ranks. Lieutenant Doohan led troops up Juno Beach as part of the first wave of 3,000 troops on D-Day. He established his command post in a shell hole just beyond the village of Graye-sur-Mer after surviving the run up the beach. However, there were still pockets of German resistance around, and Doohan was struck by multiple machine-gun bullets as he returned to his command post late that night.
