When their Mazda BT-50 ute crashed off the road in Wardell, northwest New South Wales, with 41, Benjamin Watego, 47, and Sophie-Lee Fullagar, 24, all died on scene alongside another passenger. About 5.45 a.m., a passing motorist discovered the mangled wreckage on Back Channel Road and called ambulance services. Mr Doherty, a well-known drug dealer in the Bryon area, was chasing the car to rob him, according to a witness close to the victims.
