Jacques Prevert Life

Jacques Prévert (born in February 1900 – April 1977) was a French poet and screenwriter.

His poems became and remain popular in the French-speaking world, especially in schools.

His best-known films included Les Enfants du Paradis (1945), and were a part of the poetic realist movement.

Life and education

Prévert was born in Neuilly-sur-Seine and grew up in Paris. After receiving his Certificat d'études upon completing his primary education, he dropped out of school and joined Le Bon Marché, a large department store in Paris. He was called up for military service in the First World War in 1918. After all of this, he was sent to the Near East to protect French interests there.

On April 11, 1977, he died of lung cancer in Omonville-la-Petite. He was assisting Le Roi et l'Oiseau (The King and the Mockingbird) with his companion and collaborator Paul Grimault. On opening night, the film was dedicated to Prévert's memory, but Grimault kept the seat next to him empty.
