John Holbrook "Jack" Vance (August 28, 1916 – May 26, 2013) was an American mystery, fantasy, and science fiction writer. * Although the bulk of his books have been published under the name Jack Vance, he has also published nine mystery novels. In 1984, Vance received the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement, and he was a Guest of Honor at the 1992 World Science Fiction Convention in Orlando, Florida. * In 1997, the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America inducted him as its 15th Grand Master, and the Science Fiction Hall of Fame in 2001 inducted him into its sixth class of two deceased and two living writers. A Nebula Award was awarded in 1966, as well as for The Last Castle in 1975; The World Fantasy Award in 1990 for Lyonesse: Madouc. * He also received an Edgar Award for the best first mystery book in 1961 for The Man in the Cage. In a 2009 essay in The New York Times, Vance was described as "one of American literature's most distinct and undervalued voices." * He died at his Oakland, California home on May 26, 2013, at the age of 96.
