Gulnara Karimova, the ex-billionaire whose father, Islam Karimov, was the former president of Uzbekistan, allegedly used UK firms to buy a swath of swanky homes and a jet with funds obtained through bribery and corruption. According to British investigators, the shamed socialite received hundreds of millions of dollars in bribes from telecommunications companies between 2004 and 2012 in exchange for assisting them in gaining access to the market in Uzbekistan. Karimova, a former US president who enjoyed dineding with former President Bill Clinton, is now in jail in Uzbekistan for fraud and money laundering. Prosecutors said the Serious Fraud Office took custody of three of her luxurious homes in Surrey and Belgravia worth £20 million after transferring them to the proceeds of graft in Uzbekistan in a development that prosecutors lauded.
