Irra Petina Life

Irrra Petina (April 18, 1908 - January 19, 2000) was an actor and singer as well as a leading contralto with the Metropolitan Opera in New York City.

Ken Mandelbaum, a feminist, dubbed her "floperetta queen." Petina was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, and she was the niece of Dowager Empress Marie Feodorovna's daughter.

Schwertleite appeared in Richard Wagner's Die Walküre (the second part of the acclaimed Ring Cycle) on December 29, 1933, her debut with the Met was as Schwertleite.

With Jan Peerce, the marquise of Berkenfeld in Donizetti's The Daughter of the Regiment, she appeared as Maddalena, Feodor in Boris Godunov's Lakmé, Feodor in Richard Strauss' The Child of the Regiment, as well as the title role in Bizet's Carmen. Petina's portrayal of Marcellina in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro (27 Met performances in total, with four radio broadcasts), earned her rave praise from the New York Times and the New York Herald Tribune.

Berta in Seville, Italy's The Barber of Seville, has 35 Met appearances, including a contralto, Rosalinde's high soprano role in Johann Strauss, Jr.'s opera Die Fledermaus, 1944. Petina has appeared in musicals including Song of Norway (1947), Magdalena (1948), On the Trail (1954), Leonard Bernstein's Candide (1957), which earned her a Tony Award nomination as Best Featured Actress in a Musical, and Anya (1965). Petina appeared in Andrew L. Stone's film There's Magic in Music (1941). When asked how to pronounce her name, she told The Literary Digest that the first syllable should be stressed: PEH-ti-na.
