Early life and career

She was born in Budapest, Hungary (now Hungary). Billed as "the new Dietrich" in three films with Nelson Eddy, including Rosalie (1937), and Lon Chaney Jr. in Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man (1943) as Baroness Frankenstein. She appeared in the Ziegfeld Follies in 1943.

In 1947, she appeared in Northwest Outpost, a Rudolf Friml-directed musical film. She appeared in Love Happy with the Marx Brothers in 1949. In the comedy strip "Steve Canyon," she played Madame Egelichi, a female spy, and her appearance inspired Milton Caniff in the creation of his femme fatale spy, Madame Lynx. Massey was sent by Caniff to pose for him.

Massey appeared on television in 1950 as one of the stars of the NBC spy show Top Secret. On ABC television, she debuted in Rendezvous in 1952. In a magazine article, the program was dubbed "a mystery-drama with a lot of glamour mixed in."

She hosted The Ilona Massey Show, a weekly musical variety show in which she performed songs with guests in a nightclub setting, beginning on November 1, 1954, with Irving Fields Trio's music. After ten episodes, the series came to an end on January 3, 1955.
