Smith and his twin brother Dana, both natives of Danbury, Connecticut, graduated from Immaculate High School (Danbury). Ian earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard College in 1992 and a Masters in Science Education from Columbia University in 1993.
He attended Dartmouth Medical School, pursued his medical education for the next two years, then graduated from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine.
Personal life
On May 29, 2005, Ian Smith married health executive Tristé Noelle Lieteau. In 2018, the couple sold their townhome in the South Loop and moved to a Kenwood, Illinois mansion.
