Ian Gibson Life

Ian Gibson (born 21 April 1939) is an Irish author and Hispanist known for his biographies of poet Antonio Machado, artist Salvador Dal, bibliographer Henry Spencer Ashbee, and film Luis Buuel.

Federico Garca Lorca, a poet and playwright, for which he received several awards, including the 1989 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for biography.

Federico Garca's work, La represión nacionalista de Granada, 1936, was banned in Spain under Franco. He was educated at Newtown School in Waterford and graduated from Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland, being born into a Methodist Dublin family.

He taught modern Spanish literature at Queen's University Belfast and the University of London before moving to Spain.

Viento del Sur, one of his first novels published in Spanish, investigates class, culture, family life, and British public schools in British society.

In Spain, it received rave reviews. Gibson has also worked on television on projects focusing on his scholarly work in Spanish history, including stints as a historian and even appearing in a historical drama. In 1984, he was issued a Spanish passport (citizenship).

He lives in Alpujarras, near Granada. In 1995, Ian Gibson narrated a two-part documentary for BBC2 on the Irish Potato Famine.
