Williams extended his contract until 2021 after being scouted by Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester City, in late January 2016; the contract included a €50 million buyout clause. He was suspended on February 6, with Villarreal's goalless home draw, as well as opponent Daniele Bonera.

International career
Williams received his first international call-up on March 20th, being named in Albert Celades' Spain under-21 squad for friendlies with Norway and Belarus. On the 26th of his career against the former, he made his debut against him, bringing forward goalscorer Munir El Haddadi to halftime of a 2–0 friendly win in Cartagena.

Williams was also coveted by the Ghanai national team at the time of his Spain debut in 2016, being followed closely by their Spanish scout Gerard Nus. He discussed the possibility of playing for Ghana in 2021, but he refused to perform further to bind him to his birth country permanently: "My parents are from Accra, and I love going." But I wasn't born or raised there, my family's here, and there are celebrities for whom more mean more. I don't think it would be right to replace someone who clearly needs to go and who supports Ghana 100%." This was interpreted by local media as a rejection of the Black Stars' entire strategy.
Williams, on the other hand, announced on July 5th, 2022, that he would be in Africa for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He received his first call-up in September for friends with Brazil and Nicaragua. He made his debut against the former while playing in Le Havre's second half.
