Hyun-soo Kim (born January 12, 1988) is a South Korean professional baseball outfielder for the LG Twins of the KBO League.

He previously played for the Doosan Bears, and has also played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Baltimore Orioles and Philadelphia Phillies.

Amateur career

Kim attended Shinil High School in Seoul, South Korea. He competed for the South Korea national junior team, runner-up at the 6th Asian Junior Baseball Championship in Seoul, South Korea, in September 2005. He went 1-for-4 as a backup outfielder on the South Korean roster at the championship.

Kim received the Lee Yeong-min Award in November 2005, which is given annually to the most outstanding high school hitter in South Korea.

Professional career

Kim volunteered for the 2006 KBO First-Year Player Draft after high school graduation, but went undrafted. Rather, the Doosan Bears had him activated as an undrafted free agent. He spent the whole 2006 season on the Bears' reserve team.

After starting outfielder Yoo Jae-woong was sidelined with a sprained ankle in the beginning of the season, Kim took over the starting lineup in the 2007 season. Kim finished runner-up for Rookie of the Year in 99 games with 5 home runs and 32 runs batted in 99 games.

Kim won the batting title with an average of.357 and was first in hits with 168. He finished second in MVP voting and was named as an outfielder at the Golden Glove Awards.

Kim exploded offensively in the 2009 KBO season, hitting.357 and smacking 23 home runs. He defended his hit title with 172 runs and triples (6), third in batting average, runs (97), on-base percentage (.589), and 11th in home runs.

He received the KBO Golden Glove Award for outfielder two years in a row.

Kim signed a two-year, $7 million contract with the Baltimore Orioles on December 23, 2015.

Kim continued to play in spring training before being booed on Opening Day after failing in spring training. Kim appeared in his first MLB game against the Tampa Bay Rays on April 10, 2016. He had two hits and scored a run in that game. Kim finished his first month of Major League baseball having played in just six games but making an impact by going 9-for-15 (.600), scoring two runs, and having an on-base percentage of.647. On May 29, he scored his first home run against the Cleveland Indians, who tied the Cleveland Indians 4–4 tie in the 7th inning.

Kim hit the Orioles' 56th home run in the month of June, breaking a new Major League record for the month.

In the second inning of a game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, Kim hit a 2-run home run. The O's will win the game 2–1, proving his homer to be the game champion. In the ninth inning of a game against the Toronto Blue Jays, Kim hit a 2-run home run on September 28. At the time, the Orioles were facing a 2–1 deficit, and Kim hit the go-fast, game-winning home run on the ninth pitch of his at-bat. The Orioles would win the game 3–2. Kim had a.303 batting average in his 2016 season.

The Orioles traded Kim and Garrett Cleavinger to the Philadelphia Phillies for Jeremy Hellickson on July 28, 2017.

Kim also agreed to a four-year, $10.7 million deal with the LG Twins on December 19, 2017. Kim re-signed with the Twins on a six-year, $9.7 million deal on December 17, 2021.

International career

Kim competed for the South Korea national baseball team in the 2008 Olympic Games in August 2008, where they won the gold medal in the baseball tournament. Kim scored a go-ahead RBI single in the top of the ninth off-ahead Iwase Hitoki to break a 2–2 tie as a pinch hitter, leading South Korea to a 5–3 victory over Japan.

Kim competed for the South Korea national baseball team in the 2009 World Baseball Classic, where they finished runner-up with a 6–3 record. He went 11-for-28 (.393) with 4 RBIs, 6 runs, and 7 walks, and was named to the All-Star team as the designated hitter in the tournament. In the 2013 World Baseball Classic, he appeared for Korea again, going 3 for 12 in Korea's three games.

Kim did not play for the South Korea national baseball team in the 2017 World Baseball Classic, but rather focused on getting ready for the 2017 MLB season with the Baltimore Orioles.

He represented South Korea at the 2018 Asian Games in 2018, assisting Korea in winning Gold.
