Huw Stephens Career

Career

Stephens joined Radio 1 in 1999 as part of the station's new regional success, where he hosted the Wales opt-out with Bethany Elfyn and became the youngest ever Radio 1 presenter. He appeared on Rookwood Sound hospital radio in Llandaff, Cardiff, for a week before. In 2015, he became a joint patron of Rookwood Sound.

Stephens gained a national role as part of Radio 1's One Music strand, which was designed to preserve Peel's show's spirit with DJs Rob da Bank and Ras Kwame. On Thursday evenings, he went on to host the weekend afternoon show and a two-hour new music show, as well as being a regular daytime news show. Stephens appeared on the 22:00–01:00 show from Monday to Wednesday. He appears on Sunday evenings, mainly focusing on new music that has been embraced by BBC Introducing. Steve Lamacq, Lauren Laverne, Mary Anne Hobbs, Marc Riley, and Gideon Coe also appear on BBC Radio 6 Music regularly, deputizing for Steve Lamacq, Lauren Laverne, Mary Anne Hobbs, Marc Riley, and Gideon Coe.

Stephens has long hosted an evening show on BBC Radio Cymru, which was previously part of the C2 music programme; his programme now runs on Thursday evenings under the name Byd Huw Stephens. Before being taken off air in December 2011, Stephens also hosted Bandit, a television show on Welsh-language channel S4C that showcased Welsh language music talent. He founded the "Boobytrap Singles Club," which has released limited singles by Mclusky, The Keys, and Zabrinski among others. Stephens is one of the foundings of Amse, whose titles include Mr Huw, Radio Luxembourg, and Threatmantics. "Music Sounds Better With Huw Volume 1" was released by Wichita Recordings on iTunes in 2009. Gold Panda, Dinosaur Pile-Up, Banjo, Freakout, and Young Fathers were among the 21 up-and-coming artists on display, including Gold Panda, Dinosaur Pile-Up, Freak Out, and Young Fathers.

Stephens is a curator for the BBC Music Introducing Stage, which showcases fresh unsigned and emerging talent at the Reading and Leeds, Glastonbury, Radio One's Big Weekend and T in the Park festivals. He has also invited bands and artists to perform at Sonar, Groningen, and the SXSW music festivals. Since its inception in 2006, he has hosted the Lake Stage at the Latitude Festival in Suffolk, welcomeing Cate le Bon, The xx, Sam Smith, Catfish, and the Bottlemen among others to attend. Onstage and on Green Man Radio, Stephens has been the opening host at the Green Man Festival, and DJ's have appeared onstage and on Green Man Radio.

In 2007, he founded a new music festival in Cardiff. On 9-11 November, the first Sn Festival took place in the city, with 13 venues in the city, with the exception of 2020. Sn (pronounced "soon") is Welsh for "sound," and the festival brings together new bands, DJs, and performers from Wales, the United Kingdom, and elsewhere, as well as art and films in Cardiff's venues. The Swn Festival is currently hosted by Clwb Ifor Bach.

Stephens co-produced Other Voices, which also featured performances from the Irish festival, alongside regular hosts Aidan Gillen, Annie Mac, and MayKay.
