Hunter Lawrence Burgan (born May 14, 1976) is an American multi-instrumentalist.
He is the third and current bass guitarist of AFI.
Career
At the time he joined California's rock band AFI, Burgan was in a band called the Force. He was supposed to be a temporary replacement for Geoff Kresge, the bassist, for a few tours and a film, Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes, but he eventually became AFI's full-time bassist in November 1997. In September 1998, the Force was launched.
Burgan is a huge fan of Prince's music, and even had his own side-project called Hunter Revenge dedicated to performing early-80s-style R&B. Burgan, a talented multi-instrumentalist, can play drums, bass, guitar, saxophone, clarinet, and piano. He was both a drummer and one of the Frisk's founding members who appeared in December 2005. In the mid 1990s, he was the drummer of Badical Turbo Radness (BTR), a Nevada City, California, band. He has also played drums for the Eyeliners, Gardening, Not Architecture, F-Minus, F-Minus, and the Halo Friendlies on tour.
Hunter appeared on Tegan and Sara's 2007 album, The Confession, playing bass on Tegan's songs. On the album "Back in Your Head," Conan O'Brien performed with them on Late Night, with Conan O'Brien's being the shakers. He has also revealed a forthcoming side project with Tegan, as well as contributing lyrics to three of her songs on the 2009 album Sainthood. He performed bass on Golden Shoulders' "Little Nixon," which was also on their 2009 album Get Reasonable.
He is often referred to simply as "Hunter" because his last name is not listed in AFI's list of band members, with the exception of Crash Love. He plays Fender American Jazz Basses and Ampeg Amps.
Burgan said in May 2011 when asked why he'd stopped recording with his Hunter Revenge project, he said, "I had a lot of fun writing songs in a very specific style." However, this isn't the only style of music I want to write and could write. "I'm doing a lot of other music stuff right now that's in different styles that are at least a good representation of what I'm looking for musically."
Burgan joined Alkaline Trio's Matt Skiba and My Chemical Romance's Jarrod Alexander to form Matt Skiba and the Sekrets, who released their debut album Babylon on May 8, 2012.
