Humayun Azad (listen), born Humayun Kabir (26 April 1947 – August 2004) was a Bangladeshi poet, novelist, short-story writer, academic, linguist, and professor of Dhaka University.
He has published more than seventy books.
In 1986, he received the Bangla Academy Literary Award for his contributions to Bengali linguistics.
The government of Bangladesh honoured him with Ekushey Padak posthumously in 2012.
Early life and education
Azad was born in Rarhikhal village in Bikrampur, which village is now under the Sreenagar sub-district of Munshiganj district. Jagadish Chandra Bose, a notable scientist, was born in the same village. He passed the secondary examination from Sir Jagadish Chandra Basu Institute in 1962 and a higher secondary examination from Dhaka College in 1964. In 1967 and 1968, respectively, he obtained a BA and MA degree in Bengali language and literature from the University of Dhaka. He received his PhD in linguistics from the University of Bangla in 1976 and defended his thesis "Pronominalization in Bangla." The magistrate of Narayanganj District changed Azad's surname from Kabir to Azad on September 28.

Azad married Latifa Kohinoor on October 12, 1975, the first time he met her in 1968 while studying M.A. Dhaka University is a university in Bangladesh. Smita and Mouli, their two daughters, and Anannya, their son, were born together.
Career
Azad began his studies in 1969 by enrolling the Chittagong College. On September 11, 1970 and 1972, he joined University of Chittagong as a lecturer and Jahangirnagar University. He was first promoted to the rank of professor in 1986 after being designated as an associate professor of Bengali at the University of Dhaka on November 1, 1978.
