Howard Gordon Career

Life and career

Gordon was born in Queens, New York City, and graduated from Roslyn High School. Gordon and Jorgen began attending Princeton with a major in creative writing in 1984 to Los Angeles with fellow filmmaker Alex Gansa to pursue a career in television writing. Both people ventured into the industry with single episodes of ABC's Spenser: For Hire. Their Spenser writings made company executives, and the two became bestselling writers on Beauty and the Beast and were later identified as producers.

The Gansa-Gordon team was signed to a two-year contract with Witt-Thomas Productions, during which they produced several pilots. Country Estates, an ABC program, attracted producer Chris Carter's interest.

Gordon and Gansa were invited to join The X-Files as supervising producers shortly after; Gordon wrote or co-wrote several scripts a season before removing from the show in 1997 to pursue other projects.

Gordon created his own show, the short-lived Strange World in 1999, after co-writing one episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. In the beginning of Strange World writer Tim Minear's services were snapped up by Buffy writer Joss Whedon on another project: Angel. After two years with Angel, Gordon jumped ship in 2001 for FOX's wildly popular 24, where he would write several episodes in Seasons 1 and 2, then created the entire story arcs for Seasons 3 and 4. Gordon re-join Minear, this time as co-creator of another FOX program, The Insider, after being left 24 in the middle of the 2004 season. Despite The Insider's cancellation and short run, rumors of including the two Minear-Gordon series Strange World and Inside on a special DVD set sometime in 2006.

Gordon became the 24th showrunner, a title he held until the end of the season, beginning in 2006. The fruitful agreement culminated in him retaining his position at Fox. He signed a Sony contract in 2019 after a brief stint at Foxwood Lane Productions.

Gordon is also the author of the Gideon Davis books.

Gordon co-developed the thriller Homeland for Showtime in 2010, alongside Gideon Raff and Alex Gansa. It's based on the Israeli film Prisoners of War that it focuses on a woman (Claire Danes), who works for the CIA and is convinced that al-Qaeda has turned over a recently returned American prisoner of war (Damian Lewis). The show premiered on Sunday, October 2, 2011, at 10:59 central, on October 2, 2011. Throughout its first season, the film has been praised with high critical acclaim and maintained a high viewership average. On October 5, 2014, Showtime premiered its fourth season.

He was nominated for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series in 2012, and the series itself received the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series.

Gordon also joined NBC's latest Kyle Killen fantasy pilot Awake as an executive producer in 2011. When NBC announced the show as series-wide, Gordon added writer and showrunner to his showrunning duties. The series lasted from March 1 to May 24, 2012, before it was cancelled.

He'll be back as an executive producer on Fox Television Network's horror-drama series Second Chance in 2015. Rand Ravich, who also served as an executive producer on the series, wrote the pilot for Second Chance.
