Howard H. Aiken Life

Howard Hathaway Aiken (March 8, 1900 – March 14, 1973) was an American physicist and a pioneer of computation, who was also the first conceptual designer for IBM's Harvard Mark I computer.

Personal life

Howard Aiken was married three times: from Louise Mancill to Agnes Montgomery, then to Agnes Montgomery, and finally to Mary McFarland. He had two children; Rachel Ann by his first wife, Elizabeth Betsy by his second.

Howard Aiken was also a Commander in the United States Navy Reserve.

Aiken, who retired at the age of 60 to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, continued his contributions to technology. Howard Aiken Industries Incorporated, a consulting firm that assisted failing businesses in recovering. He joined the University of Miami as a Distinguished Professor of Information during his years in Florida. In addition, Aiken has been a consultant for Lockheed Martin and Monsanto. Aiken died on March 14, 1973, during a consulting trip to St. Louis, Missouri. Mary, his widow, died in 2013.
