Hovhannes Tumanyan (February 19) [O.S. ] [1869 – March 23, 1923) was an Armenian poet, writer, translator, and public activist on February 7.

Tumanyan wrote poems, quatrains, novels, fables, literary and journalistic articles.

His writing was mainly written in a realistic style, with many of his time being centered on everyday life.

Born in the Lori district of Dsegh at a young age, Tumanyan moved to Tiflis, which was the center of Armenian culture under the Russian Empire during the 19th and early twentieth centuries.

He soon became well-known in Armenian society for his simple but also poetic works. Many films and animated films have been adapted from Tumanyan's works.

Based on Armen Tigranian and Almast (1930) by Alexander Spendiaryan, two operas were written: Anush (1912) by Armen Tigranian and Almast (1930) by Alexander Spendiaryan.

Personal life

Hovhannes Tumanyan married Olga Matchkalyan, age 17. They had ten children: Musegh (1889–1938), Ashkhen (1891–1958), Nvard (1892-1938), Arpik (1896–1981), Areg (1905–1989), Tamar (1907–1989), Areg (1891–1989), Tamar (1905–1989).
