Hishammuddin Hussein Career

Early career

Hishammuddin returned to Malaysia in 1989 after finishing his undergraduate studies in the United Kingdom. He joined UMNO and began his career as a litigator. He became a partner of Skrine & Co (present day Skrine), Malaysia's largest law firm. He left Skrine & Co. to open Thomas Mun Lung Lee's own law firm, and Lee Hishammuddin Allen & Gledhill was named as Lee Hishammuddin.

Political career

Hishammuddin rose through the ranks of UMNO's youth section in the 1990s, becoming its national chief in 1998. He took over UMNO Youth after it was shattered by the sacking of Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who was popular among young UMNO members. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Hishammuddin's predecessor, had been a key backer of Anwar.

Hishammuddin had been elected to the federal parliament for the Tenggara seat. In the government of Mahathir Mohamad's government, he was immediately named as Parliamentary Secretary for International Trade and Industry. His ascension to the helm of UMNO Youth in 1998 coincided with his appointment as the Minister of Youth and Sport the following year. In the 1999 election, he retained his parliamentary seat.

The Barisan Nasional government, now headed by Abdullah Badawi, was re-elected in 2004, with Hishammuddin retaining the newly established seat of Sembrong. Hishammuddin was re-elected as the head of UMNO Youth and as the Minister of Education.

Abdullah Badawi's demise as Prime Minister in 2009 sparked a shakeup in UMNO's senior leadership. The three UMNO vice president and the prime minister, Najib Razak, were elected as both the party and government, with Muhyiddin Yassin serving as the Najib's deputy. Hishammuddin, vacating UMNO Youth's leadership, contested the vice president's office, finishing second in an eight-man field. His ascension to the party's vice president promised him a senior Cabinet post, and he was named Minister of Home Affairs.

Hishammuddin fought for the UMNO vice presidency following the 2013 election, in which Najib's government suffered further losses, particularly among Chinese voters. He was barely re-elected in third place, finishing nine votes ahead of Mukhriz Mahathir. He redirected ministries with Zahid, taking over Defense Ministry responsibility from him. He took over the transport ministry on an acting basis; that ministry had been originally scheduled for the Malaysian Chinese Association, which had opted to withdraw from the Cabinet temporarily after suffering significant losses in the general election. He was thrust into international spotlight as the minister in charge of the investigation into Malaysia Airlines Flight 370's missing passengers. In this position, the Sydney Morning Herald sluggishly attacked Hishammuddin, alleging that he had "struggled during daily press briefings to defend his country's handling of the investigation and investigation." However, Najib defended Hishammuddin's achievements. When Liow Tiong Lai took over the ministry in June 2014, his service came to an end. Hishammuddin retained his current position as defense minister.

Hishammuddin was named Minister in the Prime Minister's Department for Special Functions in April 2017. Prime Minister Najib Razak said that the appointment would allow Hishammuddin to perform duties other than his role as Minister of Defense, but that he will continue as Minister of Defence.

Following the demise of the previous Pakatan Harapan government in February, Hishammuddin was named Minister of Foreign Affairs by newly-appointed Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin in March 2020.
