Hideo Fukuyama (born August 13, 1955), is a Japanese racing driver.

A former competitor at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, he attempted to compete in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series in the early 2000s, but only qualified for four races before leaving the series.

He was the first Japanese driver to compete in NASCAR's top series.

Hideo Fukuyama Career

Career

Fukuyama, a native of Japan, began his career as a road racer, winning the 1979 Formula Libre 500 Japanese championship, the 1992 Japanese Touring Car Championship, and the 1997 Grand Prix de Le Mans.

Fukuyama made his NASCAR debut in 1996 and 1997, and 1998 for Jeff Davis Racing in Suzuka Circuit. He crashed in the inaugural Suzuka Thunder Special in 1996, finishing 22nd; in 1997, he came second, retiring with ignition failure after 103 laps. He came 17th in Motegi's Coca-Cola 500, finishing 17th in the No. 151. 98 Ford.

Fukuyama participated in two events in the NASCAR Winston West Series in 1998 and 1999, where he finished 19th, and in the first NASCAR points event held outside of North America at Twin Ring Motegi in 1999, where he finished 15th.

Dale Earnhardt's call to pursue a NASCAR career, and Dover International Speedway became the first Japanese driver to qualify for a Winston Cup Series points event in September. The No. 9 is the most popular route. He began 43rd in the series and finished 39th due to transmission failure. He came in 43rd in the second and final race of the year in which he had registered.

Fukuyama won Rookie of the Year in the Winston Cup Series in 2003, as well as in the ARCA Racing Series for Carter, where the team was renamed BelCar Racing. He only qualified for two races, at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and Infineon Raceway, achieving his best finish at the former track, 33rd.

Fukuyama returned to Japan, where he resumed racing in the Super GT series, as well as being an analyst for NASCAR's Japanese television broadcasts.
