Hermenegildo Sabat Life

Hermenegildo Sábat (23 June 1933 – October 2nd, 2018) was an Argentina-Uruguayan caricaturist.

Life and work

In 1933, Hermenegildo Sábat was born in Montevideo's oceanfront Pocitos section. Hermenegildo, nicknamed after a grandparent who had been a popular local artist in his day, was known as "Menchi" from childhood. El Pagus, Montevideo's most popular news daily, first published a drawing of his - a portrait of Uruguayan national football team forward Juan Schiaffino - when the young artist was just 15 years old.

Sábat's first work experience in journalism began in 1955 in Acción, returning to El Pas in 1957. In El Pas, his work flourished, and Sábat became an editor at the daily, as well as contributing as a staff reporter, photographer, and illustrator. In subsequent years, his byline appeared in other Uruguayan periodicals, such as Marcha, Lunes, and Reporte, and he worked as a graphic designer.

Blanca Rodrez was married in 1961 and the couple had two children. Sábat was forced to emigrate to neighboring Argentina in 1966 due to a dispute with El Pa's owners, but not so much. Following a stint with Editorial Abril, a publishing house in Argentina, Sábate, became the sole illustrator, as well as leading dailies like Clara and Crsis. Sábat's transfer to Clarn, where he would remain over the years, after the closure of La Opinión during the new tyrantship in 1977.

Sábat's passion for jazz and tango resulted in his writing of several books on the subject, including: Carlos Gardel's biography (1971), Bix Beiderbecke, T Bix, Él Bix (1972); and Scat: a gráfica del jazz (1974).

Sábat began his apprenticeship with Clarn in 1980, while still contributing occasionally to other dailies, including the Buenos Aires Herald. With his illustrations of political commentator Eduardo van der Kooy's weekly columns, he became a fixture in Clarn. His caricatures made him increasingly popular, and he parodied even authoritarian figures such as Juan Perón and the National Reorganization Process's chief.

After Argentina's return to democracy in 1983, he kept working. President Rafons' ineffective handling of the international debt crisis and military requests earned him Sábat's reputation as a ballet dancer struggling to impress stone-faced generals or a tightrope walker struggling to keep balance. With Sábat's depiction of his tearful breakdowns and use of the elbow, prominent Catholic figures, including small halo and CGT labor union leader Sal Ubaldini (Alfons' most vocal critic), a minor halo, and a significant Catholic figure (a common Italian insult). In 1988 (among his scores of awards), his dauntless approach to humor earned him the coveted Maria Moors Cabot award (among his other awards).

Carlos Menem, Alfons' replacement, was particularly effective as an Argentine humorist's fodder. Menem's flamboyant sideburns and continuing efforts to extend constitutional term limits lent themselves to Sábat's portrayal of him as a man fused to his presidential chair.

His caricatures depicted political figures, as well as artists and other famous people. The deaths of well-known Argentine cultural figures were met with an angelic tribute by Sábat in the form of an angel (see stor Piazzolla's portrait above).

During the 2008 agrarian lockout, he portrayed President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner in Clarn, with tape over her mouth. It was a "quasi-mafioso message," she said. During the 7D, he struck Clarn with a punch to the face in reference to a judicial decision that benefited her in the war against Kirchnerism and the media. José Pablo Feinmann said that "he should not draw what he thinks" in the legislature, accusing him of violence against women, and that Buenos Aires' legislature convicted him of violence against women.

He received the Diamond Konex Award in 2017, one of Argentina's most coveted awards.

He died in his sleep on October 2, 2018. He was 85 years old at the time.
