Henry Merritt "Hank" Paulson Jr. (born March 28, 1946) is an American banker who served as the Treasury's 74th Secretary.

Paulson, the chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) of Goldman Sachs prior to his appointment in Treasury.

He is now the chairman of the Paulson Institute, which he founded in 2011 to encourage sustainable economic growth and a clean environment around the world, with a particular emphasis on the United States and China.

Early life and education

Paulson was born in Palm Beach, Florida, the son of Marianne (née Gallauer) and Henry Merritt Paulson, a wholesale jeweler. He was raised on a farm in Barrington, Illinois, as a Christian Scientist. He has Norwegian, German, and English Canadian roots. Paulson was awarded the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award in the Boy Scouts of America and was a winner of the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award.

Paulson competed in wrestling and football at Barrington High School. He graduated in 1964. Paulson continued to Dartmouth College, where he earned Phi Beta Kappa in 1968 with a degree in English. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, All-East, and an honorable mention All-American as an offensive lineman at Dartmouth. In 1970, Paulson earned his Master of Business Administration degree from Harvard Business School. Following graduating from Dartmouth, he was offered a Rhodes Scholarship but chose not to accept it.

Personal life

During his senior year, he met Wendy Judge, a Wellesley College grad, while he was in college. The couple have two adult children, sportsman Henry Merritt Paulson III, more commonly known as Merritt Paulson III, and journalist Amanda Paulson, both a Dartmouth graduate. In June 2007, the Paulsons became grandparents. They have homes in both Chicago and Barrington Hills (a Chicago suburb). His wife wrote a letter in 2016 highlighting the importance of Christian Science education in their lives.

Early career

Paulson served as Staff Assistant to the Assistant Secretary of Defense at The Pentagon from 1970 to 1972. He then served as an assistant to John Ehrlichman from 1972 to 1973.

Paulson joined Goldman Sachs in 1974, serving in the Chicago office under James P. Gorter, covering major industrial companies in the Midwest. In 1982, he became a partner. Paulson was the head of the Investment Banking group for the Midwest Region from 1983 to 1988 and then became the Chicago office's managing partner in 1988. He was co-head of Investment Banking, then Chief Operating Officer from December 1994 to June 1998, before succeeding Jon Corzine as chief executive from 1990 to 1995. According to reports, his compensation package was $37 million in 2005 and 2006, and $16.4 million estimated for 2006. His net worth has been estimated at $700 million. Paulson's total compensation from Goldman Sachs was estimated at $480 million.

Throughout his career, Paulson has had personal connections with China. "True Treasure Secretary Hank Paulson has close ties with the Chinese elite, dating from his days at Goldman Sachs in which he visited the country more than 70 times."

In order to comply with conflict-of-interest laws, he was required to liquidate all of his Goldman Sachs' worth before becoming Treasury Secretary, which was worth more than $600 million in 2006. Paulson was able to defer his capital gains tax under President George H. W. Bush's tax cut, saving him an estimated $50 million.

Career after public service

Paulson spent a year as Treasury Secretary at Johns Hopkins University as a distinguished visiting fellow and a fellow at the university's Bernard Schwartz Forum on Constructive Capitalism. On the Brink: Inside the Struggle to Avoid the Collapse of the Global Financial System, Hachette Book Group's book On the Brink: Inside the Struggle to Stop the Global Financial System from Ruining, was published on February 1, 2010.

By Washington College President and former FDIC Chair Sheila Bair, Paulson was given an honorary doctorate of statutes and environmental policy in September 2015.

He was one of eight former Treasury secretaries who begged on the UK to remain a member of the European Union ahead of the Referendum in June 2016. Paulson voiced his support for the Never Trump campaign in June and endorsed Hillary Clinton for the presidency. "The GOP, in putting Trump at the top of the ticket, is endorsing a brand of populism rooted in ignorance, mistrust, and mistrust," the Washington Post's writer wrote.

Paulson, a co-authorship with James A. Baker III, Greg Mankiw, Martin Feldstein, Ted Halstead, Thomas F. Shultz, Thomas F. Stephenson, and S. Robson Walton, co-authoring a climate change mitigation policy for the United States in 2017.

Paulson announced the establishment of the Paulson Institute, a non-partisan, independent "think and do tank" committed to promoting a US-China alliance that helps maintain global stability in a rapidly changing world. Paulson was also named as a senior fellow at the University of Chicago's Harris School of Public Policy. His five-year contract went into operation on July 1, 2011.

Paulson's book On the Brink, he details his experiences as Treasury Secretary fending off the near-collapse of the US economy during the Great Recession. Dealing with China, his second book, chronicles his experience as a consultant with scores of China's top political and corporate executives, as well as witnessing China's state-controlled capitalism's evolution. Mark Zuckerberg, the Facebook founder, was selected for the Mark Zuckerberg book club.
