ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS: A circus march is supposed to enthrall the audience during the performance. It wasn't meant as such, but as a military marche, it was created. Julius Fucik (1872-1916), a Czech composer who was born in Prague, wrote the music in October 1897 while serving as the bandmaster for the Austro-Hungarian Army's 86th Infantry Regiment. The piece was originally called Grande Marche Chromatique by Fucik. It was intended to showcase advances in the technology and manufacturing of brass instruments, which allowed musicians to perform faster and in chromatic scales.
