Career
Hugo Chávez met during his studies in Caracas shortly before the 1992 Venezuelan coup d'état attempted, and Chávez introduced Luis Reyes Reyes (who later became the Governor of Lara between 2000 and 2008) shortly before his 1992 Venezuelan coup attempts. Falcón was elected as a delegate to the 1999 National Constituent Assembly of Lara State.
He was elected mayor of Barquisimeto, Iribarren Municipality, Venezuela's third most populated city, receiving 51.6 percent of the vote in the national elections of 2000. He was reelected in 2004's regional elections with a landslide, 54.3 percent of the vote.
Falcón was elected governor of Lara State in 2008 as a representative of Venezuela's United Socialist Party (PSUV), winning 73.2 percent of the vote.
Although governor Falcón did not endorse the 2009 Venezuelan Constitutional Referendum, which was later accepted by the Venezuelan electorate, it was ultimately endorsed by the Venezuelan people.
He was re-elected in 2012 as a member of the Democratic Unity Roundtable (MUD) opposition party, winning 54.3 percent of the vote.
In 2007, Movimiento V Repblica (MVR, "Fifth Republic Movement"), of which Falcón was a member, was rebranded into the Venezuelan Socialist Party (PSUV). On February 21, 2010, Governor Falcón sent President Hugo Chávez a letter announcing his departure from the PSUV to join the more progressive pro-government group Patria Para Todos (PPT, "Fatherland for All") and subsequently became a member of the latter party's national directorate. "The relationship between a Head of state and the governors and mayors cannot be limited to the release of orders or orders without the maximum opportunity of comparison, to assess the pros and cons of your accelerated plans' merits or refusals that, after execution, turn out to be ineffective or objections to the country's interest."
Falcón declared the formation of a new political party, Progressive Advance, that was aligned with the opposition party (MUD), and therefore endorsed Henrique Capriles' candidacy against incumbent President Hugo Chávez in the 2012 Venezuelan presidential election.
Falcón declared in January 2018 that he would run for president as a member of the Progressive Advance Party, but that has been postponed to May 20.
