Juan Guaido Life

Juan Gerardo Guaidó Márquez (born 28 July 1983) is a Venezuelan politician, a member of the social-Democratic Popular Will party, federal deputy representing the state of Vargas, and currently serves as President of Venezuela's National Assembly since January 5th.

Guaidó and the National Assembly declared themselves acting President of Venezuela on January 23, 2019, gaining official recognition by almost 60 governments around the world and launching the 2019 Venezuelan presidential campaign by criticizing Nicolás Maduro's presidency. Guaidó was instrumental in the formation of the Popular Will Party with Leopoldo López in 2009.

One year ago, he was elected to serve as an alternate deputy in the National Assembly, and in 2015, Guaidó was elected as a full-seat deputy.

Popular Will nominated Guaidó for the position after a tradition to rotate the President of the National Assembly among political parties annually.

Guaidó declared that the 2018 Venezuelan presidential election was illegitimate and based on Article 233 of the Constitution of Venezuela, subsequently receiving assistance from the United States, Canada, and other Latin American and European countries; Russia, China, Iran, Syria, Cuba, and Turkey backed Maduro.

The Maduro government, which controls the country's key political and military institutions, barred Guaidó from leaving the country, frozen his Venezuelan assets, and renewed humanitarian assistance to the country.

His administration has gained control of some Venezuelan assets and buildings in the US, as well as selecting diplomats who have been approved by the supporting governments.

Early life and education

Guaidó was born on July 28, 1983. He was raised in a middle-class family with "modest" roots in La Guaira's outskirts; his parents, Wilmer and Norka, are both from a large family and of "modern" origins. His father was an airline pilot and his mother, a teacher. One grandfather was a sergeant of the Venezuelan National Guard, while another grandfather was a captain in the Venezuelan Navy. When he was a child, his parents divorced, with his father emigrating to the Canary Islands and serving as a taxi driver.

Guaidó lived through the 1999 Vargas tragedy, killing several of his classmates while also destroying his education and home, leaving him and his family homeless. According to his colleagues, Hugo Chávez's then-ineffective response to the crisis influenced his political views. "I saw that if I wanted a better future for my country, I'd have to roll up my sleeves and dedicate my life to public service," he said.

In Caracas, where he received his high school diploma in 2000, he and his family remained in a makeshift home. Guaidó will continue to live in Caracas, where he obtained his undergraduate degree in industrial engineering from Andrés Bello Catholic University in 2007. He has also been active in two postgraduate programs in Caracas: at the University of Cancun and the Instituto Superiores de Administración (IESA).

Personal life

Guaidó has been married to journalist Fabiana Rosales since 2013. Miranda and Mérida Antonieta are their two children.

Guaidó reported on March 27, 2021, that he had tested positive for COVID-19 and that he was suffering "mild symptoms" and that he had gone into voluntary hibernation. Guaidó announced on social media on Friday that he had recovered from the disease on April 5th.
