How hit-novel Tattooist of Auschwitz which told remarkable true love story of two Holocaust survivors faced claims of 'historical inaccuracies' - as author says experts have 'gone over every word' of new TV drama

www.dailymail.co.uk, May 3, 2024
The Tattooist of Auschwitz fictionalised the incredible story of Lali Sokolov and Gita Fuhrmannova and how they met in the worst of circumstances during the Holocaust. But Heather Morris's novel (left) - which has been adapted into a Sky drama that began airing this week - upset some historians who pointed out several alleged inaccuracies. An expert from the Auschwitz Memorial Research Center claimed the book contained 'numerous errors and information inconsistent with the facts, as well as exaggerations, misinterpretations and understatements.' Their report added that it provided an 'overall inauthentic' picture of reality at the camp. The book depicts how Lali, a Slovakian Jew, was sent to Auschwitz before chance landed him the role of the camp's tattooist. He spent two years tattooing numbers on the arms of hundreds of thousands of arrivals at the camp in Nazi-occupied Poland. Lali and Gita met when she stood before him with her head shaved and her dignity stolen - before he tattooed the number 34902 on her arm, according to Morris's novel. Above: Heather Morris (right), and her portrayal (inset) by Melanie Linskey alongside Harvey Keitel as the elderly Lali in the new drama.

Tattooist of Auschwitz author Heather Morris tells of her final moments with the real-life Holocaust survivor after he suffered a stroke - before her book sold millions of copies and is now TV drama

www.dailymail.co.uk, May 2, 2024
When Lali Sokolov was lying on his death bed after an extraordinary life, the woman who would reveal his story to millions was able to make him one final promise. Heather Morris (left, with Lali) vowed as the Holocaust survivor lay in hospital after suffering a stroke that she wouldn't stop trying to tell his story. That was in 2006. It would be another 12 years before Morris's novel The Tattooist of Auschwitz was finally released, after she had tried and failed to get Lali's testimony made into a film. Speaking to MailOnline as a Sky adaptation of her novel hits screens, the New Zealand-born author, 71, said: 'I was with Lali knowing he wasn't going to survive the night. I knew when I said goodbye to him I wouldn't see him again. I promised him I wouldn't stop trying to tell his story.' That story is an incredible one of survival, hope and courage. Lali encountered Gita Fuhrmannova - the woman who would become his wife (pair top right and inset) - when she stood before him terrified. Lali - himself a Jew who had been put to work under threat of death - tattooed a number on her arm like he had done to tens of thousands of people before her. Bottom right: Harvey Keitel and Melanie Lynskey as Sokolov and Morris in the new drama.

Son of the Tattooist of Auschwitz says Harvey Keitel's depiction of his father in new Sky drama left him 'in tears' and he 'couldn't tell the difference' between the star and his dad

www.dailymail.co.uk, May 1, 2024
Gary Sokolov's father Lali, a Slovakian Jew, was forced to work as the tattooist at the Nazis' death camp in occupied Poland. It was in that role that he met his future wife Gita, when she stood before him terrified as he tattooed a number on her arm. Lali and Gita (top right, and bottom right with Gary) were separated in 1945 but found each other by chance after the war and went on to marry before having son Gary in 1961 following their emigration to Australia. Their story is depicted in Sky's retelling of Heather Morris's bestselling novel the Tattooist of Auschwitz, which was released to great acclaim in 2018 after the author spent three years interviewing Lali. Lali is portrayed during his time at Auschwitz by The Little Mermaid Star Jonah Hauer-King, 28, and then Taxi Driver's Harvey Keitel (left), 84, as an elderly man. Mr Sokolov (inset left), who is now in his early 60s and lives in Melbourne , said in an interview with Sky to promote the show: 'There were moments when I couldn't tell the difference between my father and Harvey Keitel. He was my father on every single level. If he wasn't, I wouldn't have spent so much time in tears.'

The incredible true story behind the Tattooist of Auschwitz Lali Sokolov and his love at first sight romance with fellow prisoner Gita after he marked camp number on her arm

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 30, 2024
Lali Sokolov encountered Gita Fuhrmannova - the woman who would become his wife - when she stood before him emaciated and robbed of her dignity at Auschwitz death camp. Amidst the evil of the Nazi killing machine, Lali - himself a Jew who had been put to work under threat of death - tattooed a number on her arm like he had done to tens of thousands of people before her. Their ensuing romance was one ray of light that would captivate millions of readers decades later. The Tattooist of Auschwitz, the novel by Heather Morris, was published in 2018 and quickly became a worldwide phenomenon. It was based on the testimony of Lali, who tattooed prisoner numbers on hundreds of thousands of inmates who were sent to Auschwitz in Nazi-occupied Poland. A new Sky adaptation (top right) of Morris's novel is being released this week. The six-part series stars both Jonah Hauer-King and Harvey Keitel as Lali, whilst Polish actress Anna Próchniak portrays Gita. Both Lali and Gita survived the Holocaust and went on to marry in October 1945. Lali kept his story to himself for decades before revealing all to Morris.
