Early life and career
Nelson was born Peggy Lou Snyder in Des Moines, Iowa, the niece of Hazel Dell née McNutt (1888-1901) and Roy Hilliard Snyder (1879–1953). She appeared on vain for three years as a child and made her Broadway debut in her teens.
She was a regular visitor to the Cotton Club, began smoking at the age of thirteen, was briefly married to an intolerant comedian, and lived what has been described as "a high-flying life." In 1930, she wed comedian Roy Sedley (1901-1989). A year later, they married in 1933, but it was annulled in 1933. She attended high school before graduating and joining the Corps de Ballet at the Capitol Theatre, later performing in the Harry Carroll Revue and being a straight woman for comedians Ken Murray and Bert Lahr. When she first met Ozzie Nelson, a saxophone-playing bandleader, in 1932, she was still playing in vaindeville. Harriet Hilliard, Nelson's name, was hired to perform with the band. They married three years later.
Apart from the band, Hilliard had a fruitful film career as a soloist. In 1936, RKO Radio Pictures introduced her to a one-year deal, and she appeared in three feature films, the most notable being Fred Astaire-Ginger Rogers' musical Follow the Fleet. During the World War II years, she was in high demand for leading roles in escapist musicals, comedies, and mysteries.
Harriet was extremely popular during her brief stay at RKO, and he and she wanted her to continue her solo film careers, according to Ozzie Nelson's book. However, they determined that keeping the band and subsequent radio shows was more important to her.
Although the couple did appear together in films, either as a pair (in Honeymoon Lodge) or as separate characters (in Hi, Good Lookin'). They are best known for their broadcasting efforts. The Nelsons began The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, a radio-comedy series for radio, in 1944. It was extremely popular and made a fruitful transition to television. It was one of the ABC-TV schedule's most stalwarts from 1952 to 1966. Ricky and David, the Nelsons' two sons, were on the show every day. Harriet Nelson, a television documentary film starring Peter Jones, has described her as "a bombshell" in the Adventures of America's Favorite Families. She adored gay people. She loved a good off-color joke. At night, she loved her cocktails. She had the potential to continue and be a big actress, but she made the decision to be Ozzie's wife" and lost her ability.
Ozzie and Harriet appeared in the sitcom Ozzie's Girls in 1973.
