Hannibal Hamlin Life

Hannibal Hamlin (August 27, 1809 – July 4, 1891) was an American lawyer and politician from Maine.

He served as the 15th vice president of the United States in a public service career spanning more than 50 years.

Hamlin was the first Republican to hold the office from 1861 to 1865.

He is known as one of Maine's most influential politicians. Hamlin, a native of Paris, Maine (part of Massachusetts before 1820), ran his father's farm before becoming a newspaper editor.

He went to law in 1833 and began to practice in Hampden, Maine.

Hamlin, a Democrat, began his political career in 1835 with a vote in the Maine House of Representatives in 1835 and his appointment to the Governor of Maine's military staff.

Early life

In Paris, Hamlin was born to Cyrus Hamlin and his partner Anna (née Livermore) (now in Maine, then a part of Massachusetts). He was a descendant of English colonist James Hamlin, who lived in Barnstable, Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1639. He was a grandnephew of the United States. Senator Samuel Livermore II of New Hampshire.

Hamlin's life was saved as an infant by a Native American medicine woman named Molly Ockett, according to folklore. Hamlin was seriously ill, and Ockett recommended that he be given warm cow's milk, which he recovered after being rescued.

Hamlin attended the district schools and Hebron Academy, as well as later being in charge of his father's farm. He published the Oxford Jeffersonian newspaper from 1827 to 1830 in collaboration with Horatio King.

He began practicing law in Hampden, Maine, where he lived until 1848.

Personal life

In 1833, Hamlin married Sarah Jane Emery of Paris Hill. Stephen Emery, who was elected as Maine's Attorney General in 1839-1840, was her father. Hamlin and Sarah had four children together: George, Charles, Cyrus, and Sarah.

He married in 1855. Hamlin married Ellen Vesta Emery, Sarah's half-sister, next year. Hannibal E. and Frank were the couple's two children together. Ellen Hamlin died in 1925.
