Early life
Hamida Omarova was born to Mammad and Nasiba Omarov, a teacher from Mammad and Nasiba Omarov. Her parents met at university, where both of them learned foreign languages, and went on to have four children, three of whom died in their infancy. When Hamida was born, her parents paid a visit to the Sufi Hamid shrine in Qazakh, but they named her after the shrine because the newborn was so fragile. Hamida Omarova was raised by her mother and grandmother following her parents' divorce in 1960 and her father's permanent return to his homeland Gazakh. After graduating from high school, she enrolled at Baku State University to study philology. She participated in an academic competition with others 300 people in 1975 and was one of the 15 contestants accepted to the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography in Moscow.
Career
In 1977, Omarova's first appearance was in The Dentist, a short film. Since then, she has appeared in more than 30 films and gained her reputation as the most popular Azerbaijani actress of the decade, performing at least four film shootings simultaneously. She is best known for her role in Yuli Gusman's film Gorkhma ("Don't Be Afraid, I'm With You"), which is located in Gakh, Azerbaijan. Her work was recognized with a variety of awards, including that of a People's Artist of Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan's film industry saw major decline after the 1991 break of the Soviet Union. For Omarova, it was both a career loss and a mental breakdown. She married in 1992 and gave birth to a son after going through a bout of depression. She hosted the late night show Retro, a weekly review of classic films from Azerbaijan and around the world at the same time. In 2006, Omarova was elected President of the Azerbaijan Union of Cinematographers.
