Mongrain started his media career as a news radio anchor in 1977 and made his television debut in 1981 he was a contributor to several shows on TVA including Midi Soleil, Bonjour matin and Samedi magazine. Mongrain hosted a quiz game for the first time in 1987 when hosting Quebec a la carte which has a quiz game related to Quebec tourism. He hosted the show for less than a year while it ended in 1988. Then he would later host Charivari for over four years until 1992.
