Gustavo Aguirre (born April 1, 1985) is a Mexican professional basketball player for Zenit Saint Petersburg of the VTB United League and the EuroLeague.

He also represents the senior Mexican national basketball team in international national team tournaments.

He appears in center and power forward positions at a height of 6 ft 10 in (2.08 m).

Ayon has been selected for the second time in the All-EuroLeague Second Team.

Early life and college career

Gustavo was born on April 1, 1985, to parents Ayón Ayón and mother Linda Ayón.

Ayón studied at Universidad Popular Autónoma de Puebla, Mexico, for three years. In leading his team to the National Championship, he was named the Most Valuable Player of the Mexican College Championship Tournament.

He enrolled with NCAA Division I San Jose State University after the season. However, Ayón never played for the Spartans, deciding instead to join Halcones UV Xalapa, a Mexican professional team.

Professional career

As the team finished second in the Liga Nacional de Baloncesto Profesional in 2006, Ayón saw some action off the bench for Halcones UV Xalapa. Ayón made the team's starting lineup the following season and then led Halcones to back-to-back Mexican league championships in 2007–08 and 2008–09. In 2007,-8, he averaged 10.2 points and 8.8 rebounds per game, and he improved on that by averaging 13.2 points and 7.8 rebounds per game the following season. Ayón's team won 94-90 overtime over Soles de Mexicali, his second consecutive league championship, in what was to be his last game for the team.

Ayón joined Baloncesto Fuenlabrada of the Spanish League following the 2008-09 season. Ayón was named Spain's ACB Player of the Month in November 2011.

After paying Baloncesto Fuenlabrada with a $1.5 million buy-out contract, Ayón signed with the New Orleans Hornets of the NBA on December 11, 2011, the NBA's top-selling contract was signed. Ayón has had a three-year contract, with the last year as a team option.

In a sign-and-trade contract for Ryan Anderson, Ayón was traded to the Orlando Magic on July 11, 2012.

Ayón was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks along with guards Ish Smith and JJ Redick for guards Beno Udrih and Doron Lamb, as well as forward Tobias Harris on February 21, 2013.

He was waived by the Bucks on July 25, 2013.

The Atlanta Hawks waived Ayón's waivers on July 29, 2013. In an 83–104 loss to the Toronto Raptors, Ayón scored a career-high 18 points on February 12, 2014. Following a successful surgery to recover a right shoulder injury, Ayón will miss the remainder of the 2013-14 season, it was announced on February 28, 2014.

Ayón signed a two-year contract with Spanish club Real Madrid, coached by Pablo Laso on September 23, 2014. Real Madrid won the EuroLeague in 2014–15 season after beating Olympiacos by a score of 78-59 in the league's finals. Real Madrid won the Spanish League championship after a 3–0 series sweep over Barcelona in the Spanish League finals series. Real Madrid has also taken the triple crown with the help of the championship.

In the first week of the playoffs, Ayón was named EuroLeague MVP of the Round, and in week nine of the 2015–16 season, the city was in Week 9.

For December 2015, Ayón was named EuropeLeague MVP of the Month for January 4, 2016. He was named to the All-EuroLeague Second Team for the 2015–16 EuroLeague season on May 6, 2016. He was named Player of the Month in the Spanish Liga ACB in May 2016.

Ayón signed a new three-year deal with Real Madrid on July 14, 2016.

Real Madrid won the 2017–18 EuroLeague championship in May 2018 after beating Fenerbahçe Douş 85–80 in the final game. Ayón's average was 9.6 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game in 17 EuroLeague games.

Real Madrid defeated Kirolbet Baskonia in June 2018, aided them in the 2017-18 ACB Spanish League Championship.

Ayón led Real Madrid to the 2018-19 ACB Spanish League Championship by defeating FC Barcelona Lassa in June 2019.

Ayón signed a one-year contract with Zenit Saint Petersburg of the VTB United League and the EuroLeague on July 26, 2019. He had 12 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists per game. On July 26, 2020, Ayón would have left the team after a year.

National team career

Ayón has been a member of the senior Mexican national basketball team since 2007. He was the center of the seventh ranked Mexicans in the 2007 FIBA Americas Championship and the fifth placed team at the 2008 Centrobasket.

In 2013, Ayón led Mexico to victory in the FIBA Americas Championship's gold medal game against Puerto Rico. Ayón was named to the All-Tournament Team and named the tournament's MVP.

Ayón led Mexico to victory in the gold medal game against Puerto Rico at the 2014 Centrobasket in August 2014. Ayón was dubbed the tournament's MVP. He returned to Mexico later this month for the 2014 FIBA World Cup.

Ayón was selected to the 2015 FIBA Americas Championship All-Tournament Team for his 17.7 points per game (2nd in the tournament), 12.4 rebounds per game (second in the tournament), 1.3 blocks per game (1st in the tournament), and 1.2 blocks per game (1st in the tournament).

In June 2018, Ayón helped lead Mexico to a 78-70 victory over Team USA in 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup qualification (Americas).
