Grete Sultan Life

(born Johanna Margarete Sultan) (June 21, 1906 – June 26, 2005) was a German-American pianist. She studied piano from an early age with American pianist Richard Buhlig, and later with Leonid Kreutzer and Edwin Fischer. * She was barred from playing in public and could only be seen in concerts of the "Jewish Culture Association" in 1933. Sultan fled Germany in 1941 via Lisbon, from where she emigrated to the United States by sea, with Buhlig's help. * She landed in New York City and began piano lessons, first at Vassar College and the 92nd Street Y, then at the Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, New York. * She met composer John Cage in the mid-1940s and became good friends with him, and it was through Sultan that Cage got to know Christian Wolff, who gave Cage his first copy of the I Ching, which influenced Cage's composition methods throughout the subsequent decades. Cage devoted two pieces to Sultan. Music for Piano, the first was part of his Music for Piano series; Music for Piano 53–68. Etudes Australes, a monumental piano cycle that was in the process of discovering Cage's Music of Changes, was released in 1974. Sultan made the first recording of the performance and appeared in concerts around the world. * She appeared on Alan Hovhaness and Tui St. George Tucker's music, but contemporary composers weren't the only ones who were interested in her performance: she helped promote Bach's Goldberg Variations in the 1940s, from Beethoven, Chopin, and Schubert to Stravinsky, Moron Feldman and Morton Feldman. At Merkin Concert Hall in New York, Grete Sultan gave her last performance in 1996, aged 90, in Bach's Goldberg Variations. * She died in a Manhattan hospital five days after her 99th birthday. Schott Music, Germany, released the first biography on Grete Sultan, "Rebellische Pianistin," in spring 2012. Moritz von Bredow, a Hamburg-based writer, wrote "Das Leben der Grete Sultan zwischen Berlin and New York."
