Gregory Nava Life

Gregory James Nava (born April 10, 1949) is an American film director, producer, and screenwriter.

Personal life

Nava was born in San Diego, Mexico and Basque roots. Nava graduated from St. Augustine High School in San Diego and went on to attend film school at UCLA, where he earned an MFA in 1976. At UCLA, he directed The Journal of Diego Rodriguez Silva (based on Garca Lorca's life), and received the Best Dramatic Film Award at the National Student Film Festival. In 1975, Nava married Anna Thomas. They worked on many projects together, including Christopher (born 1984) and Teddy (born 1985), before separating in 1995. They divorced in 2006. Barbara Martinez, Nava's daughter, was married in 2013.

Career

Although an instructor at Moorpark College teaching cinematography, Nava's first feature film, The Confessions of Amans, received the Best First Feature Award at the Chicago International Film Festival in 1976. Later, he attracted Hollywood attention thanks to El Norte's success, which earned Nava and his wife Anna Thomas an Academy Award nomination, among other accolades for the screenplay. The film was registered by the Library of Congress, National Film Registry, in 1995. "El Norte tells the tale with astonishing visual splendor, with unashamed melodrama, with sadness left by hope." The Confessions of Amans, A Time of Destiny, My Family, and Frida (screenplay) are among Thomas' other collaborations.

In 1997, Nava's film Selena starring Jennifer Lopez, who was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress.

For PBS, Nava produced the television series American Family: Journey of Dreams from 2003 to 2004. He also supervised a few episodes.

Nava produced, wrote, and directed the film Bordertown, which made its debut at the Berlin Film Festival in 2006 on February 15, 2007. The film, which is based on true events, is a political drama about a string of unsolved murders in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. Jennifer Lopez, a Chicago-based journalist who follows the story, appears on the show. The film was shot in New Mexico and Mexico.
