Bradley Gray Maynard (born May 9, 1979) is an American mixed martial artist who competed in the Ultimate Fighting Championship's Featherweight division (UFC).

He competed in a legendary rivalry with former UFC Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar between 2008 and 2011.

Maynard made his UFC debut in 2007 while wrestling at Michigan State University.

Personal life

Maynard and his longtime girlfriend are now engaged. Estella, Maynard's daughter (born 2013), is her mother.

Gray Maynard co-starred in the film Art of Submission, with Ving Rhames and Ernie Reyes, Jr.

Maynard appeared on "Schumacher Family" episode of Supernanny, showing the family's seven-year-old son how to fight at Randy Couture's gym. On the last episode of the 11th season of The Ultimate Fighter, Maynard served as an Assistant Coach alongside Forrest Griffin and Tyson Griffin with head coach Rich Franklin.

Mixed martial arts career

Maynard was only one of the contestants on The Ultimate Fighter 5, which exclusively featured Lightweights. He was chosen by B.J. Penn will be on his team and was Penn's pick to advance to the finals.

In the preliminary round, Maynard defeated Wayne Weems. Maynard met Brandon Melendez in the quarterfinals and took the title with a guillotine choke in the second round. Due to guillotine choke, he missed his semifinal match against Nate Diaz in the second round.

Maynard defeated Rob Emerson in a tumultuous Lightweight contest on June 23, 2007, as part of the Ultimate Fighter 5 Finale preliminary Card. In round one, Maynard seemed to be in charge of the game. Emerson was picked up by him in the second round and slammed him to the ground. Emerson was quickly tapped out due to a rib fracture. Maynard also could not proceed because he appeared to have struck his head on the floor and knocked him out due to the force of his own slam, according to the referee. Since both fighters could not continue, he declared it a "No Contest." "I know one thing, that Maynard was out cold," UFC President Dana White said. Maynard did not agree, and cited the cage-side doctors, who discovered no concussion during the fight.

After nine seconds, he took on Joe Veres at UFC Fight Night 11 and knocked him out with the first punch he threw, and after that he had to leave. It was the second fastest knockout in UFC history (see UFC 102). Next Maynard earned a unanimous decision over Dennis Siver at UFC Fight Night 12's earning ratings of (29–28, 30–27, and 29–28). Frankie Edgar was defeated by lightweight champion Frankie Edgar in the first bout of their rivalry at UFC Fight Night 13. Edgar was denied his first defeat by a 30–27 majority vote on all cards. He used his superior wrestling to command the fight, winning a divorce.

As part of The Ultimate Fighter: Team Rampage vs. Maynard, also served as an assistant wrestling coach for Forrest Griffin. Team Forrest.

At UFC 90, Maynard was unanimous in his decision over Rich Clementi. Maynard displayed his superior wrestling in his bout again by governing Clementi on the ground for three rounds. During his post-fight interview, he did however appear to be quite angry that he was unable to finish the war.

Maynard continued fighting at UFC 96 against lightweight Jim Miller, who eventually won by majority decision once more, with all three judges determining the match 30–27. Maynard fought backwards, demonstrating solid takedown defense and good stand-up skills, particularly looping bodyshot combos.

At UFC Fight Night 19, Maynard defeated Roger Huerta by a split decision. Huerta in a visibly deep kimura during the war, but his opponent refused to submit, despite his opponent's refusal to submit.

At UFC Fight Night 20, Maynard defeated TUF 5 lightweight champion Nate Diaz by a split decision.

Maynard defeated Kenny Florian on August 28, 2010 at UFC 118 by unanimous resolution (30–27, 30–27, and 29–28). Maynard took Florian down at will and escorted him to the mat, making him the top contender for the UFC Lightweight Championship.

Maynard and the champion Frankie Edgar fought to a split draw at UFC 125 on January 1, 2011. Early reports indicated that Anthony Pettis, the former WEC champion, would get the next title shot, but Dana White later revealed that Edgar vs. Maynard 3 will be the next lightweight title match at UFC 130. The fight was called off early on May 9, as injuries to both sides were suspected. Many consider the second battle against Edgar to be one of the best fights in UFC history.

The third fight between Edgar and Maynard took place on October 8, 2011 as the main event of UFC 136. Maynard was disqualified by Edgar via KO at 3:54 of round 4, giving him his first official loss of his career. Edgar was able to close out on Maynard's shootings and becoming the aggressor in a first round similar to the first round in their match at UFC 125. Maynard was crowned with a flurry of punches, beginning with an uppercut that shocked Maynard.

Maynard's Head boxing coach Gil Martinez told The MMA Show on November 21, 2011, that he would leave Xtreme Couture's gym for the American Kickboxing Academy.

On FX 4, Maynard defeated Clay Guida. He won the competition by a split decision.

On December 29, 2012 at UFC 155, Maynard was supposed to face Joe Lauzon. Maynard was forced to withdraw due to a knee injury, and Jim Miller was brought to the octagon and was replaced by Jim Miller.

Maynard met T. J. next. On May 25, 2013, Grant at UFC 160. Dana White said at the UFC on Fox 7 post-fight press conference that he wants that the winner of the Maynard/Grant fight to get a UFC Lightweight championship shot against Benson Henderson. In the first round, Maynard was disqualified by TKO.

At The Ultimate Fighter 18 Finale, a rubber match with Nate Diaz took place on November 30, 2013. In the first round, Maynard was disqualified by TKO in the first round.

Maynard was supposed to face Fabro Cames on August 2, 2014 at UFC 176. However, Maynard/Cames was rescheduled and scheduled to take place on August 16, 2014 at UFC Fight Night 47, following UFC 176's cancellation. Maynard stepped up as an injury substitute for Abel Trujillo after he was forced to drop out of a match with Ross Pearson. In the second round, he lost by TKO against Pearson.

After Pearson's loss, he signed a new, eight-fight deal and returned to Las Vegas to train at Xtreme Couture.

At UFC Fight Night 63, Maynard defeated Alexander Yakovlev on April 4, 2015. He was disqualified by a unanimous decision.

On July 8, 2016, Maynard defeated Fernando Bruno in a featherweight tournament at The Ultimate Fighter 23 Finale. He won the fight by unanimous decision.

Maynard defeated Ryan Hall at The Ultimate Fighter 24 Finale on December 3, 2016. He lost the fight by unanimous vote.

On July 7, 2017, Maynard defeated Teruto Ishihara in the Ultimate Fighter 25 Finale. He won the battle by a unanimous decision.

Maynard was pushed to naught against Nik Lentz at UFC 229. In the second round, he lost via TKO after being kicked by a head kick and ending with punches. Maynard revealed that he had departed from the UFC after a decade in coverage, spanning almost his entire career in mixed martial arts.
