Grant Fox Career

Playing career

Fox was born in New Plymouth. He attended Auckland Grammar School.

He wore the number ten jersey (first five-eighth or fly-half) from 1985 to 1993, and was the All Blacks' main goalkicker. He has scored 645 points from 46 All Black Test Matches (1 attempt, 118 conversions, 128 points, 7 drop goals) – He has scored 645 points (1 try, 118 conversions, 7 drop goals). He is regarded as a true pion of goal kicking, in particular the leanings of the ball forward, which have been adopted by world class kickers since. Even though he was not a superb runner with the ball in hand, many believe he is one of the best first five-eighths in All Black history.

Despite his brief height, he made up for this with remarkable distribution skills aided by his long-time colleague John Kirwan's then-world-record career statistics for Auckland and the All Blacks. His inability to score tries was often a turning point in the team – his cause was not aided by an unsuccessful attempt against Ireland in 1989 (due to a prior technical infringement by a teammate).

After the cancellation of the official NZRFU tour in 1985, Fox was a member of the New Zealand Cavaliers that toured apartheid South Africa in 1986. Fox was banned from being eligible in the All Blacks for three tests for participating in the rebel tour.

Fox won the inaugural Rugby World Cup with New Zealand in 1987, a win largely due to his accurate kicking.
