ALISON BOSHOFF: Wild child Lily Allen gets serious in Scandi classic Hedda Gabler

www.dailymail.co.uk, May 2, 2024
In a bold move which signals considerable ambition, Lily Allen, 38, will play Hedda Gabler in a new adaptation of Ibsen's play titled Hedda, by British director Matthew Dunster. It will be only her third stage role, following a well-received stint in 2:22 A Ghost Story - in which she was directed by Dunster - and a slightly less well-received performance in Martin McDonagh's The Pillowman. Ingrid Bergman, Peggy Ashcroft, Maggie Smith , Diana Rigg, Cate Blanchett , Glenda Jackson and Rosamund Pike have all played Ibsen's manipulative, tragic heroine.

JOAN COLLINS: I'm an Oscar voter, but I have to ask: Why are so many new films dark and troubling - what happened to glamour?

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 13, 2024
Hollywood is a twitter from early January to mid-March. In La La Land, it's awards season. A pair of stylists fly in a preview of gowns for the 'female actors' (which I also reject in favour of the gracious and feminine 'actress' as well as some of the more flamboyant'male actors.' The make-up and hair specialists, nail technicians, and facialists all followed the stylists. They arrive from New York, Paris, and London, working frantically to make their client the epitome of glamour, not glamour, but instead beauty and 'trendiness,' rather than glamour.

www.dailymail.co.uk, November 19, 2023
During its first weekend of release, the film, simply named Golda and released in the United Kingdom the day before the Hamas attack on Israel, premiered on 59 screens, a disappointing figure for a major film starring a big name. The Great Escaper, starring Sir Michael Caine and late Glenda Jackson, premiered on 616 screens across the United Kingdom on the same day.

BRIAN VINER Michael Caine, a veteran British movie actor, has come to an end, revealing today on BBC Radio 4 that he will not get any parts better than the one for which, aged 90, he is currently receiving rhapsodic praise. In The Great Escaper (right), the true story of World War II soldier Bernard Jordan, who was nipped out of the care home where he lived with his wife (played by Glenda Jackson), Caine walked across the Channel to attend the 70th anniversary D-Day commemorations.

Sir Michael Caine has resigned from acting, according to him. On Friday, the veteran British actor, 90, announced his retirement after a stellar career that spanned seven decades [right in 1963's Zulu, top center in The Italian Job, 1971, Get Carter]. Sir Michael, a filmmaker who has appeared in over 180 films, reaffirmed his decision after finding that 'you don't have leading men at 90.'

Michael Caine and Glenda Jackson - Still a double act worth saluting!BRIAN VINER reviews The Great Escaper

www.dailymail.co.uk, October 6, 2023
The film depicts the events of 48 hours. Bernie, 89, is retired, and in a small apartment in Hove, East Sussex, he and his elderly wife Rene, short for Irene, are really old and obviously not concerned about a single bit.'Bernie' is 89. He was a leading seaman during the D-Day tumult, and he was tasked with allowing tanks to the beach during the disaster. So he's rather miffed to learn he's applied too late to join a Royal British Legion trip to France on the 70th anniversary of the landings.

Battle bus pilgrimage: As moving D-Day film The Great Escaper is released, hop on board for a historic tour through Normandy

Michael Caine hints at retirement as he insists his new film may be his LAST: 'I'm b****y 90 now and I can't walk properly!'

www.dailymail.co.uk, September 21, 2023
Michael Caine has speculated that his forthcoming film The Great Escaper may be his last, adding: 'I'm bloody 90 now, and I can't walk properly.' In the forthcoming drama, which is based on true events, the Academy Award-winning actor, 90, stars alongside Glenda Jackson. The film tells the tale of a Second World War soldier who came home in Hove, East Sussex, to attend the D-Day landings in France's 70th anniversary.

The Great Escaper: According to BRIAN VINER, there are plenty of things in this heartwarming film to prick your tear ducts

www.dailymail.co.uk, August 3, 2023
Bernard Jordan, an 89-year-old Second World War II veteran, captured the public imagination almost as well as Captain Tom Moore later did. He left his care home in Hove, without alerting the workers, and travelled by himself to Normandy for the 70th anniversary of D-Day commemorations (bottom right). By the time 'Bernie's' arrived home, much to his surprise (but not entirely to his delight), he had made news and television bulletins around the world. Even if the film weren't perfectly cast, it would be a moving story, with Sir Michael Caine (top right) coming out of retirement to play the title role and late Glenda Jackson (left), playing his ailing wife Rene. Both are fantastic, with some attaining the alchemy whereby, although we all know we're watching two mighty old troupers at work, they fully inhabit their characters. And if the long-distance romance between the tough old sailor Bernie and the fierce yet lovable Rene (pair pictured inset) doesn't prick your tear ducts, there's plenty in this heartwarming film that will.

These are the most notable SORE LOSERS at the awards: An examination of those who did not win: a look at the reactions from those who did not win

www.dailymail.co.uk, June 17, 2023
Every actor in Hollywood hopes to be praised for their hard work, as well as the fact that they were unable to be recognized for their hard work. Whether it's an Oscar, a Tony, or a Golden Globe, Tinseltown's top attender awards showcases each year in the hopes that it will be their name that is called. However, not everyone can win an award, and some have had rather obnoxious reactions when they didn't win.

For that matter, a dull collection of "labels that hold women back" was just not worth the money. So where does that leave the Sussexes? Glenda Jackson, beyond any doubt one of the best actresses of her time, was known as the most versatile performer in the theatre, and the greatest loss was sustained for more than two decades, writes CHRISTOPHER STEVENS. Her refusal to be fools and her contempt for brittle male egos made her a divisive figure - one who was not concerned with personal fame.

ANDREW PIERCE: A Reeves mole in Whitehall?

www.dailymail.co.uk, September 28, 2022
ANDREW PIERCE: Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves, who is leading Labour's resistance to Sir Keir Starmer's keynote address, was singled out for praise in Sir Keir Starmer's address on the Tories' tax cut budget. Reeves, the lacklustre MP for Leeds West, is better placed than many to comment on the biggest tax reforms since 1972. Nick Joicey, one of new Prime Minister Liz Truss' most respected politicians, was married to her. She first started with her as Environment Secretary in 2014. 'He's also a key figure in the government's economic planning,' says my Whitehall mole.

ALISON BOSHOFF: Suits Huw, Sir! Edwards, a veteran newsreader, has been voted a knighthood

www.dailymail.co.uk, September 22, 2022
ALISON BOSHOFF: Edwards may move away with more than the Beeb and his followers' good wishes, as consideration is being given to the honor of his decades of journalism. Huw is expected to be given a 'K' by King Charles in the New Year's Honours, and it will surely be a major move. The Welshman posted a distinctly vain photograph of himself on Instagram on Monday evening: in the BBC studio looking out at Buckingham Palace after the crowds had passed, he shared a photo of himself. 'It's been a privilege,' he said. My coworkers are the best in the world. 'Thanks for all the kind messages.' Edwards' record on the BBC is impressive. He has been leading royal coverage from the Diamond and Platinum jubilees to Princes William and Harry's weddings.
