Gilles Carle Life

Gilles Carle, (July 31, 1928 to November 28, 2009) was a French Canadian director, screenwriter, and painter. Before joining the National Film Board of Canada in 1960, Gilles Carle, who was a central figure in the development of a commercial Québec cinema, worked as a graphic artist and writer. * La Vie heureuse de Léopold Z., his debut feature, chronicled a snowplough operator's adventures during a whispersome Christmas Eve. But after the NFB refused several of his proposals, he began to work alone. Carle began working with Pierre Lamy in 1971 to form Les Productions Carle-Lamy, which produced Claude Jutra's epic Kamouraska, Denys Arcand's early films, and all his early films. * The quirkily paced, proto-feminist La Vraie Nature de Bernadette, his best film, and Le Mort d'un bûcheron later led to the more modern but graceful Les Plouffe and Maria Chapdelaine, both Quebec cinema classics. * Carle won the Canadian Film Award for his 1972 film The True Nature of Bernadette. Carle was born in Maniwaki, Quebec. In 1990, his film 50 ans, which is commemorating the National Film Board of Canada's 50th anniversary of filming, received the Short Film Palme d'Or at the 1989 Cannes Film Festival. Carle was given a Lifetime Artistic Achievement Award by the Governor General's Performing Arts in 1997, Canada's highest honor in the performing arts. * He was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1998. * At the hospital in Granby, Quebec, he was made a Grand Officer of the Ordre National du Quebec in 2007. * He is survived by his son and three daughters, as well as Chloé Sainte-Marie, his 27-year companion. * At his death, Quebec Premier Jean Charest described him as one of Quebec's most influential filmmakers.
