Vincenzo Natali (born January 6, 1969) is an American-Canadian film producer and screenwriter best known for writing and directing science fiction films such as Cube, Cypher, Nothing, and Splice.
Early life and education
Natali was born in Detroit, to a nursery school teacher/painter mother and a photographer father. He is of Italian and English descent. At the age of one, he and his family immigrated to Toronto, Canada. During his time at Royal St. George's College, Natali befriended British-born Canadian actor David Hewlett, who has appeared in the majority of Natali's films. Natali was also a student at Ryerson University and studied film. He was eventually hired as a storyboard artist at Nelvana Animation Studios. Samuel Beckett, David Cronenberg, and Terry Gilliam were among his cinematic influences.
Career
Natali's first film appearance came in 1997, when he wrote Cube, which he also co-wrote. The film became a hit worldwide, especially in Japan and France, grossing $60 million in the latter region and beating box office records for a Canadian film. The film received five nominations at the 19th Genie Awards, as well as the award for Best Canadian First Feature at the Toronto International Film Festival. Natali went on to direct Cypher (2002) and Nothing (2003) after this triumph.
Natali's next attempts were likely to be an adaptation of J. G. Ballard's 1975 book High Rise and a 3D version of Len Wein/Berni Wrightson's comic book character Swamp Thing for producer Joel Silver, with an adaptation by J.G. Ballard's 2009. Natali was to replace Joseph Kahn as the head of the highly awaited sequel to cyberpunk author William Gibson's 1984 book Neuromancer, according to a May 2010 article in The Hollywood Reporter.
Natali was nominated for the 4th Annual Splatcademy Awards under the category "Best Director" presented by Cadaver Lab for his work Splice. On Super Channel in Canada, his film Darknet, an adaptation of Tori Hada's Japanese film Tori Hada, premiered in 2013. He produced the episodes "Su-zakana" and "Naka-choko" of Hannibal's second season's crime drama series, as well as the episodes "Antipasto," "Primavera" and "Secondo" in 2015, the third season of the same TV series. He also directed the second episode (entitled "Simon") of the first season of the American supernatural drama television series The Returned in 2015. In 2016, he produced the fourth episode ("Dissonance Theory") of HBO's Westworld series Westworld. He supervised the fifth episode ("Lemon Scented You") of the Starz series American Gods in 2017. He produced a pilot for a new Tremors TV series starring Kevin Bacon repriseing his role from the 1990 film, but SyFy did not include it as a series.
Amazon launched a television version of William Gibson's The Peripheral in April 2018, with Natali as one of the executive producers. Natali was the show's pilot.
