Gert Wingardh Life

Gert Wingrdh (born 1951) is a Swedish architect whose firm, Wingrdh Arkitektkontor, maintains a worldwide presence.

Personal life

Gert Wingrdh was born 1951 into a wealthy family in Skövde, Västergötland county, as the youngest child. His father owned the local cement factory, and his family's house was built on a limestone peak. Both cement and limestone are materials that Wingrdh has used in his later work.

When Wingrdh was ten years old, the family migrated to Gothenburg. He was mocked by other boys for a while after moving to Gothenburg. He became interested in art and cinema as a young boy.

Wingrdh and his family still live in metropolitan Gothenburg, near Marstrand in Kungälv Municipality. His house, an old cottage in the picturesque setting of an ancient village, contrasts sharply with the modernist style and skyscrapers with squares and sharp edges that he created in his professional life.

Education

In 1970s Gothenburg University and Chalmers University of Technology, Wingrdh studied economics, art history, and architecture and wrote a book about it. In interviews, he said that it was a trip to the Pantheon, Rome, that made him want to become an architect. He had aspired to be an art gallery owner before deciding to become an architect.

In 1975, he obtained his degree in architecture from Chalmers.

Gert Wingardh Career

Career

In the 1970s, Gert Wingrdh began as an interior decorator. He worked for a brief time before establishing his own office in 1977 after graduating. In 1988, he had his big breakthrough as a regular architect with the ijared Executive Country Club outside Gothenburg. He was given the Kasper Salin Prize for the building.

In recent years, he has worked in both the United States and Germany. Wingrdh is also the creator of the Swedish embassies in Washington and Berlin. However, the bulk of his realized buildings can be found in Sweden, particularly in the city of metropolitan Gothenburg. Wingrdh won a major international competition for a new shopping center in Malmö in 2007, and seven of the ten hottest architecture projects in Stockholm – listed by a Swedish national newspaper – were completed by Wingrdh in 2007.

Several innovative initiatives have drew widespread notice, but others such as a conference center in stersund, Jämtland, on the summit of a mountain called Breath of Life, have failed to be executed. In these experimental projects, features that were not included in the built projects, such as the curved glass façade that was installed in Malmö's shopping mall Emporia in 2011.

He is generally considered the most well-known living Swedish architect because of his abilities, his way of attracting the media's constant interest, and the numerous awards he has received. Nonetheless, his role as a public figure is not without controversy. For example, he is known to be a fan of skyscrapers, which has made him the object of criticism from some (Swedish) colleagues.

He earned the Prince Eugene Medal in 2005 and became a PhD (HC) at Chalmers University of Technology. Gert Wingrdh was appointed adjunct professor in building design at Chalmers University in 2007.

In 2010, the Wingrdh office employed about 150 workers.
