George Lyon Career

Golf career

Despite the fact that he began playing golf at the age of 38, due to a lack of golf courses in most Canadian regions prior to that date, he earned the gold medal in golf in the 1904 Summer Olympics in St. Louis, Missouri, only eight years since the sport was first introduced. He won the Canadian Amateur Championship eight times between 1898 and 1914, the last time in his 56th year. He was also the runner-up in that competition on two other occasions. He won the Canadian Senior Golf Association Championship ten times between 1918 and 1930, his last appearance in his 72nd year; these tournaments were held before the Canadian Senior Golf Championship was established by Golf Canada in 1918.

In 1908, he returned to London to defend his Olympic title, but plans to stage a golf tournament there were postponed at the last minute, since representatives from England and Scotland were unable to agree on the format. Lyon refused to acknowledge the gold medal by mistake. Golf did not return to the Olympics until 2016.

Lyon was also a founding member of the Lambton Golf and Country Club in Toronto, alongside Albert Austin. On June 13, 1903, it was officially opened.

Lyon used to compete in 4-ball matches with future Canadian golf hall of fame member George Cumming.
