Stephen Ames Career

Professional career

In 1987, Ames earned a golf scholarship at the College of Boca Raton in Florida, and became a professional, but he didn't win a PGA Tour card for the first few years, partially due to a neck injury. In 1991, he won his first professional tournament in the United States (the Ben Hogan Pensacola Open), as part of the Ben Hogan Tour.

Ames tried his luck at European Tour Qualifying School in 1992 and was very popular. He spent five seasons on the European Tour and made the top 80 on the Order of Merit every time, with a record of 13th in 1996. He took the 1994 Open V33 Grand Lyon in France as well as the 1996 Benson & Hedges International Open in England.

Ames was ranked third at the PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament in 1997, and the 1998 season was the first to be exempt from qualifying. Ames was unable to attend the PGA Tour in 1999 for nearly six months due to visa difficulties.

He didn't make it to the top 40 of the money list in his first six seasons. At the 2002 The Players Championship, he was runner-up to Craig Perks. Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh, and Davis Love III competed in 2004 for the first time on the PGA Tour at the Cialis Western Open, drawing a field that included many of the best professionals in the country, including Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh, and Davis Love III. He made the top 20 in the Official World Golf Ranking later this year.

The Stephen Ames Cup, a 2005 event, was held in Ames, Ireland, where the Stephen Ames Cup was based on a worldwide Ryder Cup format competition. The match pits CJGA Team Canada against Team Trinidad & Tobago. He co-hosts an annual charity golf tournament for kids with MP Jim Prentice, as well as owning the Vintage Chophouse in Calgary.

After initiating world No. 201 in February 2006, the world No. 2 was debating it in February. "Anything can happen, especially where [Tiger's] hitting the ball," Ames was evisively defeated by Woods at the 2006 WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship in La Costa, losing 9 and 8, the most a player can possibly lose in an eighteen-hole match play tournament is 10 and 8. However, Ames overcame the humiliating loss by winning the TPC at Sawgrass on March 26. Ames was victorious over World No. 2, who included Woods, in a tournament in the United States, defeating 48 of the best golfers in the world (including Woods). Retief Goosen, the second-oldest champion in championship history, has been named second. Ames climbed 37 places to 27th in the Official World Golf Ranking with the win over the US$10 million career earnings record and climbed 37 places to 27th in the Official World Golf Ranking.

In the final round of the 2007 PGA Championship, Ames was in the final pairing with Tiger Woods, but he was disqualified after shooting a 76, finishing T-12. He won his third PGA Tour victory at the Children's Miracle Network Classic in November 2007. He has been ranked in the top 25 of the Official World Golf Rankings.

Ames won for the fourth time on the PGA Tour in 2009, this time at the Children's Miracle Network Classic, where he defeated the final round -8 64. He triumphed in a three-way playoff over George McNeill and Justin Leonard.

In August 2014, Ames was inducted into the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame.

Ames won his first PGA Tour Champions victory in his 49th appearance at the Mitsubishi Electric Classic on April 16, 2017. In the final round, he shot 66, finishing four strokes behind Bernhard Langer by a 66. He is the third Canadian to win on the tour and the 11th golfer to win on the three main tour tours run by the PGA Tour: PGA Tour Champions, PGA Tour Champions, and Web.com Tour.

Ames came from behind and won his second PGA Tour Champions competition at the Principal Charity Classic in June 2021.
