He is best known for his role in his own-produced ABC sitcom.

Early life
Lopez was born in Mission Hills, California, on April 23, 1961, as the son of Frieda and Anatasio Lopez, a migrant worker. He is of Mexican descent. When he was two months old and by his mother when he was ten years old, his grandfather, Benita Gutierrez, a factory worker, and his step-grandfather, Refugio Gutierrez, a building worker, was abandoned by his father. Lopez attended San Fernando High School, graduating in 1979.
Personal life
Lopez married Ann Serrano in 1993. Mayan, the couple's daughter, was born in 1996. Lopez revealed on September 27, 2010 that he and his wife had decided to end their marriage. Serrano applied for divorce on November 23, 2010, citing "irreconcilable inconsistencies" as the reason for the separation. On July 1, 2011, the divorce was finalized.
Lopez has a inherited disorder that has caused his kidneys to deteriorate. His doctors had warned him in April 2004 that he would need an organ transplant, but he postponed the procedure until George Lopez's fourth season began. Annette Barrett's wife donated one of her kidneys to Lopez in 2005. The transplant went well; Lopez shed 45 lb (20 kg) after the surgery due in large part to his health's changes. He brought the topic to his attention; Max, his character's son, was diagnosed with a similar disease.

Lopez was approached by actress Sandra Bullock for Lopez to produce and star in a comedy in 2000 after many years of doing stand-up comedy. Bullock was worried about the lack of Hispanic-oriented sitcoms on American television, so he tried to get a sitcom on television that starred Hispanics without focusing solely on the Hispanic American community. ABC ripped up the television show after Hispanic American companies were long chastised for a lack of Latinos on their television shows. Lopez became one of the few Latinos to appear in a television comedy series in 2002, following Desi Arnaz, Freddie Prinze, and John Leguizamo.
