He appeared in more than 100 films and television shows, but he was most well known for his film roles with Clint Eastwood and Robert Redford.

Personal life
Lewis was married three times and had many children. According to some news outlets, he had nine surviving children and others had ten children. Juliette Lewis, a child of his parents, appeared in at least two films, Blueberry (aka Renegade) and The Way of the Gun, and he was one of his children. Brandy, Hannah, and Emily Colombier's children; his sons Peter, Lightfield, Miles and Matthew; and nine grandchildren.
He died of a heart attack at age 79 on April 7, 2015. According to his family, he suffered the heart attack while working at the Motion Picture & Television Country House and Hospital. Miles Lewis admitted to Variety that he had been suffering from Parkinson's and dementia.
Life and career
Lewis was born in Plainfield, New Jersey, but he spent a majority of his childhood in Wrightwood, California. He studied theater arts at San Bernardino Valley College for two years, then worked as a truck driver and in other odd jobs before starting his career as an actor. He took acting lessons at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York City and appeared off-Broadway and at regional theaters in Massachusetts. In the 1960s, he attempted to break into Hollywood.
Lewis appeared in TV series including Bonanza, Gunsmoke, Mannix, Mission: Impossible, Cannon, Mork & Mindy, The Golden Girls, Lou Grant, Mama's Home, Magnum, P.I., The X-Files, Walker, Texas Ranger, and Law and Order: Criminal Intent. He appeared in Salem's Lot in 1979. He also appeared opposite Polly Holliday in the Alice spin-off Flo (1980–81), for which he received a Golden Globe award. In Land's End (1995–96), he co-starred with Fred Dryer.
His film credits include Down in the Valley, The Butcher, Maverick, and When Every Day Was July's Fourth of July.
Lewis worked with actor Clint Eastwood in several films, including Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, Pink Cadillac, Any Which Way You Can, Bronco Billy, Any Which Way You Can, Bronco Billy, Every Which Way You Can, but Loose, Thunderbolt, and Lightfoot, as the High Plains Drifter.
Lewis, a member of musical storytelling group Celestial Navigations with singer and songwriter Geoff Levin, was also a member of the 1980s.
