Pierson appeared on Broadway in Tricks Of The Trade with George C. Scott, before going on to perform several New York soap operas and many regional theater performances. Angelo in Measure For Measure at the Yale Rep. Stanley in A Streetcar Named Desire at the Penn Ctr. is one of the notable stage performances. Stage, Bobby in the Company of Speed The Philadelphia Theatre Company and Ricky in Glengarry are two of the Pennsylvania Stage Company's Glen Ross and Teach in American Buffalo. Frank Ryan on Ryan's Hope was his most well-known daytime role, appearing from February 1983 to September 1985.

In the WB sitcom Unhappily Ever After, created by Ron Leavitt, one of the creators of FOX's Married... with Children, Pierson's first high-profile prime-time television appearance was as Jack Malloy, the head of a dysfunctional family. R.T. Howard on That 80's Show, as well as recurring roles on Grace Under Fire, In Plain Sight (USA) and The Firm (NBC). On the ABC comedy Rodney, he played Rodney's long lost dad.
