Gavin James Creel (born April 18, 1976) is an American actor, guitarist, and songwriter.
Creel is best known for his work in musical theatre, for which he has been nominated for originating Jimmy's role in Hello, Dolly! and two other nominations for his role as Claude in Hair.
He has been lauded for directing the West End version of Elder Price in The Book of Mormon at Prince of Wales Theatre, and he has appeared in Elder Price's role on Broadway and in the US National Tour.
Steven Kodaly appeared in She Loves Me, the Roundabout Theatre Company's production, which premiered in spring 2016.
Early life
Creel was born in Findlay, Ohio. He attended Findlay High School, graduating in 1994. In 1998, he earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts in musical theatre at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance.
Personal life
Creel is gay. Rosie O'Donnell, a regular on the LGBT Vacancies cruise, is a veteran. He is also one of the founders of Broadway Impact, an LGBT advocacy group that mobilized the New York theatre community in the search of marriage equality, alongside Rory O'Malley and Jenny Kanelos. He is a member of Findlay First Edition Show Choir, and he denigrates the group. In 2009, he was in a friendship with actor Jonathan Groff.

Career
Creel began his work in regional theater. Some of his earliest appearances include performances as part of Pittsburgh CLO's resident cast of 1997 and 1998 seasons; mainly ensemble roles; some of his eight productions included Kiss Me Kate, La Cage aux Folles, and On the Town. Productions in Massachusetts and New York state are among the Boston and New York state's other notable theater credits at this time.
Creel played Nick Piazza in the first cast of the 1998 national tour of Fame after college graduation. The tour ran in 1998–1999, including Toronto, Washington, D.C., and Chicago. He continued to perform in regional theater until moving to New York City in the early 2000s. He was the swing in the first off-Broadway production of Bat Boy: The Musical in 2001. He also participated in the Spring Awakening workshop in 2001.
Creel made his Broadway debut in the original production Thoroughly Modern Millie in 2002, starring Jimmy Smith opposite Millie Dillmount of Sutton Foster. He was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical, a first performance. In April 2003, he appeared in Stephen Sondheim's Road Show, later titled Bounce, and appeared in various productions and workshops. Of note, Bill made his screen debut in the 2003 film Eloise at the Plaza and its sequel-up Eloise at Christmastime.
In 2004, La Cage aux Folles, a revivalist, returned to Broadway. During the film, he played Jean-Michel. He made his West End debut in Mary Poppins in 2006. Bert was fired in the original production, but he was recalled. He also released his debut studio album Goodtimenation in 2006.
In 2009, he returned to Broadway in the revival of Hair. He received his second Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical for his starring role of Claude. He and the remainder of the cast appeared in London until 2010, when the play was transferred to the West End. Following Hair, he appeared in Pro Proheus Bound and the first US tour of the Flashdance musical; the national tour was supposed to be a pre-Broadway performance but did not transfer.
Creel appeared in a number of The Book of Mormon films from 2012 to 2015. In 2012, he appeared in Elder Price for the first National Tour of the Show. He continued to appear in the musical's original West End production, and at this performance, he was named Best Actor in a Musical at the 2014 Laurence Olivier Award, the country's most coveted theatre awards. Following his West End appearance, he returned to the touring stage for a few months before joining the Broadway cast in 2015.
In the 2016 Broadway revival of She Loves Me, Creel played suave salesman Steven Kodaly, opposite Jane Krakowski. The show was a critical success, and it became the first Broadway show to be live-streamed. The recording has since been part of PBS' Great Performances series Great Performances.
