Garth Fagan Life

Gawain Garth Fagan, CD (born 3 May 1940) is a Jamaican modern dance choreographer.

Garth Fagan Dance, a modern dance company headquartered in Rochester, New York, is the founder and artistic director of the company.

Early years

Fagan was born in Kingston, Jamaica, to Oxford educated S.W. Fagan, Jamaica's former Chief Education Officer, and Louise I. Walker are among the visitors. It was a gymnastics class that first attracted his interest in dancing. He studied with Ivy Baxter at the Jamaica National Dance Company and appeared at the inauguration of Cuban President Fidel Castro in 1959 while attending Excelsior High School. Fagan was educated at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree with a focus on becoming a psychologist.

Fagan worked at several dance companies in Detroit and then moved to Rochester New York in 1970, where his dance company, "Bottom of the Bucket BUT... Dance Theatre," was born. He was a professor at State University of New York, Brockport, beginning in 1970. In the 1970s, Fagan choreographed for the Dance Theatre of Harlem, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and the Limón Dance Company. He has studied Martha Graham, Martha Graham, Pearl Primus, Alvin Ailey, José Limón, and Katherine Dunham. He has also been influenced by Caribbean and West African dances.

Fagan's choreography incorporates elements of modern dance, ballet, Afro-Caribbean dance, and social dance. Many of his drawings are autobiographical or contain themes of personal significance. His untitled 1977 book chronicles the breakdown of his marriage, exposing a couple's first love and admiration but then drifting apart due to inevitable obstacles. The experiences of the underprivileged in New York City, which premiered in 1991 at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, are chronicled in this series. The work contrasts linear balletic movement with twitching, screaming, and flirtatious partnering to show the variety and contrast found in large cities as well as personal struggles. Fagan's childhood, adolescence, and his mother's relationship were all chronicled in Moth Dreams, choreographed in 1992.
