EXCLUSIVE BY ALEX BYWATER: Researchers on a study looking at the impact of head injuries on former footballers - one supported by the Football Association and England manager Gareth Southgate - have been accused of a 'conflict of interest' and 'marking their own homework' after their initial findings were published. The Health and Ageing Data in the Game of Football (HEADING) study assessed the link between exposure to heading a football, other impacts to the head, and concussions with cognitive function among 199 ex-male professionals in England aged over 50. In its first reported findings - which were published last month and are yet to be peer reviewed - the researchers said: 'This study generally does not support an association between exposure to heading a football and poorer cognitive function among former male professional players.'

A turbulent two months were put to one side on Tuesday as Annie Kilner ventured out in Cheshire with her newborn son. Anthony Gordon has revealed that a Liverpool icon was his footballing hero while growing up, despite the former Everton winger having once insisted that he 'lived and breathed' the Toffees.  The 23-year-old started his footballing journey in Liverpool's youth academy before switching to join Everton at the age of 11. He rose through the ranks at Finch Farm, graduating into the first team before completing a £40million move to Newcastle in 2023 - a deal that soured relationships between him and some Everton fans. Gordon had refused to train with the club before telling the Merseyside outfit that he would not be returning amid interest from Newcastle.

Leeds United have reached the final for the first time this century and face Manchester City, a dependable force since the Abu Dhabi takeover. They are prestigious academies, with 26 out of a total of 26 in English football bestowed with Category One status, but the Youth Cup this season will be regarded as a triumph for those struggling for survival in the undergrowth.
