Austin Salyer, 20, was lying in bed inside his apartment when he fatally shot in San Marcos, between Austin and San Antonio, in September 2021. Gabriel Brown, a 24-year-old boy, mistakenly shot his neighbor through the wall when building a rifle. He later turned himself in but was not arrested. Brown was later charged with criminally negligent murder and was sentenced to 180 days in prison for 18 days in jail for both Salyer's birthday and the first five years of the shooting.
